P55M-UD2: Phoenix Pro SSD only occasionally detected
« on: September 18, 2013, 11:39:42 pm »
Hi,
I have a P55M-UD2 with two hard drives. I'm trying to install an additional SSD (Phoenix Pro) and it's not working. I have tried various combinations of power and SATA connections, all with the same result. What's weird is that sometimes it will show up, both in the BIOS and in Windows. (I run OS X on one of the HDs, and it never shows up there.)  But then if I restart, it'll disappear. Sometimes it'll give me a SMART error for the drive on boot, but not always. I have installed the latest firmware on the drive, and I believe my BIOS is up to date (F11). Any suggestions? Thanks.

It could be the Sata cable. I have had some SSD's that if you are using clip in type some times they will not clip in right.

On some of them I'll use a sata cable without clips. Plus I had two Crucial M4 64GB that were doing the same thing.

They finally came out with a firmware update to fix the problem. They would just disappear and the only way I could get them was power down the computer with the PSU switch.

That's what I thought, but I've tried two different cables and two different power connections. Same result.

Just been reading the reviews at Newegg on the 120gb and there was people having the same problem. I would talking to G-Skill on it.

Yeah, I'll definitely contact G.Skill. The only thing that gives me pause about it being the drive is that if I stick It in an external usb case, it works fine.

Then it still sounds like connection problem. Because when you put into a USB device you get a good solid connection.

It's definitely not a connection problem. I just connected a spare hard drive to the same connection and it works perfectly.
Always showing up across several reboots. The good news is that the SSD is still under warranty. Hopefully the new drive won't have the same problems.

No idea why it would work fine  over USB  but not internally, though.
