Z68AP-D3 Rev1 - 7970 not registering in PCI-E x16 slot!

I have recently upgraded from a 560ti to a 7970 and I can only get the new 7970 to operate in the mboards x4 pci-e slot.  I have updated the bios to the latest version, I have ensured a clean install of the new AMD drivers but can cannot come to any conclusion why the graphics card is not working in the x16 slot, any help would be much appreciated! There many threads on this problem 3.0 cards and 2.0 mother boards. Plus I bet you are using a sandy bridge CPU too. This is one thread: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,13932.0.html

One thing you can try update the bios. More likely it might not help. Yes it should work by what everybody is saying but it doesn't.
