GA-Z87X-OC - Question regarding boot time with external hdd.

Hi all,

I've look through the forums but can't see anyone with a similar issue.  Basically I have just bought a new pc (specs below) and I always use an external Western Digital USB 2.0 HDD to store music, films etc.  Now the when I intially turn on my pc, it's taking a rather long time reading this external drive before it will show anything on screen such as the MB logo.  It takes about 40 seconds, if I disconnect it takes about 7 seconds.

My question is, is there a way to disable it reading this external drive when I first turn my pc on?  I have tried using usb 2.0/30 ports at the back, updating the BIOS to F7 and changing the boot order and nothing seems to work.  My 6 year old pc never did this and got through the bios stage in about 6 seconds with this drive plugged in.

All I can find is this and you will have to play around with this in Peripherals

USB Storage Devices
Displays a list of connected USB mass storage devices. This item appears only when a USB storage device is installed.

The other things is try changing some of the UFEI to legacy.

Hi dmdilks, thanks for the reply.

I have tried adjusting some settings under peripherals to legacy and removed the drive from the boot options but nothing has helped .  Would fast boot be an option?  I don't want to disable usbs all together on startup as I wont be able to enter bios.  The cold boot this morning was the longest yet, about 40-50 seconds it's driving me mad...

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated/

I had the same problem with a USB drive. I don't really care how long it takes to boot.

I'm from the computer age where you turn it on. Then you went and got a cup of coffee.

But here all you can do is try it.

Fast Boot
Enables or disables Fast Boot to shorten the OS boot process. Ultra Fast provides the fastest bootup
speed. (Default: Disabled)

Do you know if that will disable all usb's connected?  As both my mouse and keyboard are wired usb 2.0s, worried I wont be able to get back in the bios to turn it back on...

No it will boot the computer the same way as you have set now. But only faster and the only reason they have set that way.

So when you first boot that it will let you get into the bios to set it up. After you have everything set than you should change it to the faster boot options.

I had a go at using the fast boot option, it is a little better.  But it tends to try to load the drive just before the main win 7 login window where the screen will turn off for a little while.

I just don't understand why a new machine would do this where my 6 year old machine does not have this problem....

I don't know what else to tell you on this. I'm just going by what I'm reading in the book maybe somebody else that has this board can help sorry.
