GA-990FXA-UD3 rev4 + AM3+ FX6300 - won't post.

Hi All,

I just bought a GA-990FXA-UD3 rev4 to use with my AM3+ FX-6300 - but the system won't post.  The CPU barely spins, like its struggling.  I just upgraded, everything works fine in my other board.  Both power connectors are in.  I tried with both a CM 500w and 750w PSU - same results.  

I also returned the MB and got another one, same issue.

Any ideas?

Check for bent pins on the CPU.
Swap/RMA the CPU too if it looks ok.
When you install CPU-s make sure you discharge yourself to metal,to avoid static electricity ,it kills components.Never touch the pins.

CPU is not bent, works fine in my other mb.  I read a few articles where people reported the boards still needed a bios update.  This happened with two of the same board but still boots fine in my cheapy msi.  I'll just be returning the mb and giving the asus board a try.  I have no time for this type of headache.

If your power supplies are OK them your problem is 90+% is a bent pin on the CPU.  I've put together at least 500 hundred computers with
Gigabyte 970 or (mostly) 990 motherboards in the last two years and when I have had YOUR problem it has turned out to be IN ORDER:
     1. at least one pin was bent ( even on new cpu's )
     2. problem with at least one memory stick
     3. bad power supply

I use Gigabyte boards on most of my builds over the last ten years because they have been the most reliable.

I have been building computers for almost 30 years and have used motherboards from almost every manufacturer that has existed.

The board is rev 4 and it should "take" the CPU from BIOS version F1 ,but the way it behaves is like the CPU is not supported.
Try with a PSU from Corsair and make sure you have the 8 pin CPU power supply cable installed properly.
Otherwise RMA.
Gigabyte has some issues with the boards based on AMD 9xx chipset (and some other AMD boards) lately and issues can happen.
They are focusing on the quantity this days mostly so bad mobos can happen from time to time

It was 100% not a bent pin or a bad PSU.  The board just didn't support the CPU out of the box as it advertised.  I returned it an got an MSi 990FXA-GD80v2, booted flawlessly.  

Aside from the obvious lack of CPU support, what I didn't like about the Gigabyte board was the lack of on-board led debugging. When it failed to post, I had to guess what the problem based on very limited symptoms.  I have had MSI boards in the past and they all have had the led debugging and post code reader on-board.  This is VERY usefull.

Thanks for the help, but the RMA the CPU, bent pins and bad PSU conclusions were way off, I understand you don't want to assume the board - but read the symptoms.  My first post indicated the CPU worked fine in the board I had upgraded from and I had tried multiple PSU's ... help the users, don't lead them away from a solution because you want to protect your brand.

Glad you got things working and you are happy with the MSI board. But on a Gigabyte board the CPU fan will do that not spin at first.

I have had 4 of the 990FXA series board. They all do the same thing. You said the board didn't post. Did it boot but nothing on the screen?

Were you getting any beeps? If you do try another Gigabyte down the road it might have not been the CPU. It could have been something else.

It might have not like the video card or the memory that is why I ask did it boot but nothing on the screen.
