GA-H55M-UD2H First boot problems

Hi all,

First post here in the forum and I'm afraid it's a problematic one :/

I did a new build yesterday with the following components:

CPU: Intel i5 760
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H
RAM: Ebuyer Extra Value 4GB (2 Dimms)
Graphics: Gigabyte NVIDIA GTX 460 OC
HDD: Hitachi Deskstar 1TB
PSU: Antec Basiq 500W

On first attempt at boot the fans started spinning (case, heatsink, graphics) and the power cut off after 2 seconds, after that power got cycled again (loop). The phase lights on the mobo at this stage were green, green, yellow, red. I've removed the graphics card and booted again and this time it did not cut off. However no beeps coming from motherboard just phase lights continuously on in the same configuration.

I've tried removing components (RAM, HDD, DVD) and booting just with the mobo, CPU and PSU, and same thing happens. There are no shorts (I've pulled the mobo out and tested it on a piece of cardboard) that are obvious and I have tested the PSU with a multimeter and everything seems to be in tolerance levels. The speaker is connected to the mobo in the right configuration but I haven't heard  single squeak from it even with the memory removed which would suggest motherboard problem.

The big questions is... Which component is at fault here? No beep would suggest the motherboard but then again why did the computer shut off after connecting the graphics card? Also would a faulty CPU cause a lack of beep? The only troubleshooting pointer on the motherboard are the phase lights which I could not find any description for in the manuals or on Gigabyte's website.

Any help would be really appreciated!

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte UK Forum.

At the moment it could be several things that are causing the problem but I would say that it would seem like tha PSU is the most likely. Can you try a graphics card that requires less power just to see if it will then work?

The other option is to truy swapping out the PSU for something a bit meatier and preferably with a single 12V rail.

Do you think the power supply could be faulty even though all the voltages on pins are fine? Also if the fans are spinning and everything but the CPU, mobo, PSU is disconnected shouldn't the motherboard beep?

Unfortunately I don't have any spare parts :/ Might pop into Maplins and see whether I can get a PSU and return it after testing...

Is there anything else I could try?

Have you checked all the voltages when the system is going? Don't forget the voltages will more than likely be fine until you put a load on the PSU and then if there are any problems it will show as a voltage drop.

Yup, Voltages were tested on live system on the 20-pin, no spikes on any of the pins...

What would be a standard behavior for a faulty CPU? Would the mobo still light up with the phase LEDs, would the fans be spinning?

Did you use the same sytem including the GPU to test with because if you used a different system with different power requirements it could  work fine?

I tested the PSU on the same system. GPU wasn't plugged in because the computer gets a reboot loop then...

Yes thats what I wondered. Problem being that if it isn't powerful enough that is exactly what I would expect to happen. Gut instinct tells me you need a different PSU and as I said earlier I would try to get a roughly 650W with a single 12V rail. Something like this:

I've tried a different PSU - OCZ GameXStream 850W but unfortunately no luck...

Same behavior as before - Phase lights on and fans on but no beeps. When GPU is connected reset loop kicks in...

I've tried a few things since then: clear CMOS again, take off CPU and heat-sink, reapply thermal paste, check pins on processor under magnifying glass and everything seems to be in order to the best of my knowledge.

I've called the supplier and I'm going to send the mobo and cpu back as DOA, they kindly accepted the fact that without another mobo and cpu I can't really tell which component failed.

One thing bothers me... Could this possibly be the GPU? The reason why I think it's not is because with it disconnected the mobo doesn't beep.

It is hard to now what could be the problem in this instance. As you mentioned I would have expected a beep code when the GPU was missing. Of course if the motherboard or CPU was faulty then again it might not beep. I think you have made the right decision to RMA them both and let the retailer sort it out. It will probably be quicker and won't involve any more money being spent on your behalf.

Please let us know when it is sorted what the problem was.

I just had this problem, and I have almost the same hardware. ( H55-USB3, same CPU, 2-2gig sticks of crucial RAM, 1TB WD Black, EVGA 460 SC)

I was banging my head against the wall.  I swapped out almost everything same looping problem.  This was my first 1156 socket board, first one with DDR3.

Anyhow I was using the 1st and 3rd memory socket behind the CPU, which has been the typical location since Dual Channel memory configuration came out with the P4.  Turns out you need to populate the 2nd and 4th behind the CPU, the two white slots, not the blue if you only have two memory sticks.

Anyhow that was my fix.  Since I did not have a speaker in my new case I never heard the beeps.

Yes I don't know why the swap to the other locations but in general if you use the white slots it is correct. It does actually tell you in the manual and is another good reason for reading it first I guess. I would suggest however investing a few pence in a buzzer as it can be money well spent and would have saved you a lot of time and holes in the wall

I realise this is an old post but it seems most relevant to my problem. My hardware is;
CPU: Intel i5 760
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H
RAM: 2 x Corsair XMS3 4gb
Graphics: HIS IceQ HD 6950 2gb
HDD: WD Caviar Green 2tb
PSU: Be Quiet Dark Power Pro 650w

The phase lights displayed are exactly as the initial poster has described. I never hear post, I never get a video output. I've tried using the onboard graphics but have read elsewhere this isn't applicable anyway in my CPU's case.
I have tried another graphics card (Nvidia GTX260) and another PSU (Corsair HX 850w). I've moved my RAM to slots 2 and 4, I think they were in 3 and 4 previously (the machine worked in this configuration for a couple of years).
I would really appreciate someone's help if possible?
