GA-H55N-USB3 with 8gb RAM : is it possible?
« on: November 26, 2014, 06:50:07 am »
 Hi!

I'm trying to put 8 GB (2x4GB) on GA-H55N-USB3 but it just does not work. When connecting 2x4GB the computer starting up, and restarting after about 10 seconds. But If a put 2x2GB or  4GB + 2 GB the system works perfectly.

Anyone know of any 2x4GB model that works? In the official list of supported memory there are only two models with 4GB and both are impossible to find after so many years of release.

I really appreciate your help!

 My specs:

Motherboard: GA-H55N-USB3 (latest BIOS update - F5)
O.S.: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits
CPU: Core i5-760
Graphic card: Gigabyte GTX 770
PSU: Corsair 750 w
Official memory support list : http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_ga-h55n-usb3.pdf

1.2 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 8 GB of system memory (Note 1)
2.Dual channel memory architecture
3.Support for DDR3 1666 (O.C.)/1333/1066/800 MHz memory modules
4.Support for non-ECC memory modules
5.Support for Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory modules

Put in 1 4 gig stick and enter bios and make sure your timings are right. Then enter windows then shut down and put in other stick. see if that works. The memory list usually isn't updated after so long a period.  I have pretty good luck with GSkill memory.

You never said what the speed of the memory. That Cpu will only support 1066/1333. I understand that yes I'm using the that speed memory now. But when you add more memory it will do that.

Remember that almost everything goes through the CPU. The more memory you put in the more the CPU has to work to support. At what point does it stop. It looks like the limit is 6gb on that speed. Without OC CPU a little.

I'll tell what happen to me the other day. I had one brand of memory in this computer I'm building to sell. It booted fine and even got to the point where windows was installing. At that point windows gave me an error.

I tried another DVD drive. same thing. Tried another windows disk same thing. I change the memory to a different brand and everything was fine. Both brands were the same speed & timings.

Again you never said what the brands and speed were. What I'm saying is not all brands are the same. Even some times the same brand might give you problems. I use basically two brands Kingston and G-Skill.

These are the DDR3 combs I have for the test:

  2x 4GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/4G with ELPIDA chips - low profile size
  1x 4GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/4G with KINGSTON chips - low profile size
  1x 2GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/2G with KINGSTON chips - standard size profile

Scenario 1: error
DIMM1: 4GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/4G with ELPIDA chips - low profile size
DIMM2: 4GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/4G with ELPIDA chips - low profile size

Computer starting up, and restarting after about 10 seconds. Not even arise the BIOS screen. (impossible to enter the BIOS)

Scenario 2: error
DIMM1: 4GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/4G with KINGSTON chips - low profile size
DIMM2: 4GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/4G with ELPIDA chips - low profile size

Computer starts normally, but the BIOS only recognizes 4 GB. The windows loads normally and also recognizes only 4 GB.

Scenario 3: error
DIMM1: 4GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/4G with ELPIDA chips - low profile size
DIMM2: 4GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/4G with KINGSTON chips - low profile size

Computer starting up, and restarting after about 10 seconds. Not even arise the BIOS screen. (impossible to enter the BIOS)

Scenario 4: error
DIMM1: 4GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/4G with ELPIDA chips - low profile size
DIMM2: 2GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/2G with KINGSTON chips - standard size profile

Computer starting up, and restarting after about 10 seconds. Not even arise the BIOS screen. (impossible to enter the BIOS)

Scenario 5: OK!
DIMM1: 4GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/4G with KINGSTON chips - low profile size
DIMM2: 2GB Kingston 10600 (1333 MHz) KVR1333D3N9/2G with KINGSTON chips - standard size profile

Computer starts normally. The BIOS and Windows properly recognize the 6 GB installed.

  My questions:

  - It will be an incompatibility between  GA-H55N-USB3 and memory with chips ELPIDA?
  - It will be an incompatibility with the module size? (standard size vs low size profile)

Sorry I had to put you through that. But that way we know what is happening and can help you better. I did some checking on your board. It isn't the board. it is the memory. You are using different brand chips of memory.

It doesn't like you ELPIDA chips. That is why the Kingston with Kingston chips work. See if you can get another Kingston with Kingston chips and it should work.

The thing is when you install memory it should be all the same. Yes there are times you might get away with different types. But you have learn that it doesn't always work. Memory has to be the same chips, speed and timings.

You were absolutely right! I got a new 4 GB with Kington chips and is now working correctly with 8 GB.

Thank you for your precious help!  :)
