SPDIF Optical Output on Gigabyte GA-Z97x-UD5H
« on: August 19, 2014, 10:43:17 pm »
I have optical cable going to my 5.1 DTS/DD capable receiver. I switched to that output in the Realtec Audio Manager. Running Blu-ray with DTS.  Receiver is only seeing 2 channels.  (no DTS or DD) . I am assuming that the optical output does not decode DTS or DD.

If so do I need software or must I get a sound card to get 5.1 DD or DTS ?

Thank you for your reply.

The Bluray is LG WH12LS39 BluRay DVD CD R/W

Denon AVR3803 is the receiver.
I also have a Sony STR-DG1200 Receiver
Both are capable of DTS/DD.  I get the same results with both. (2 channel digital audio)

Although I am curious to know what knowledge of the receiver is needed for. Every device that I have ever hooked up to any DTS/Dolby Digital receiver has been automatically read by the receiver as  DTS/Dolby Digital ( i.e. TIVO, DVD Players and stand alone Bluray).

I figured out the issue.

I am using VLC Player to play bluray disc. I needed to make adjustments in the audio preferences of the VLC player and now I can play blurays with DD 5.1.

I am using DAUM (pot player) to play mkv files with DD encoding. I had to make adjustments in the audio preferences in that player to get DD 5.1.

Apparently the default settings in these players are not set to play DD/DTS.

Alas !  I am learning
