990fxa-ud3 rev. 4 Powers down with Gigabyte 750gtx
« on: October 28, 2014, 08:57:52 pm »
Hello Everyone,
So I built my new pc and I am having a heck of a time with 1 component. I'll give you a rundown on what I went from and went to and then explain the issue.
What I had: Intel e6850 - dual core 3 ghz
 2 x 2gb 6400 corsair ram
 Zotac 9800gt
 Rocketfish 700w PSU
 1 Blu-Ray internal player
 3 x sata HDD's
 1 x external HDD
 Gigabyte EP45 UD3P Motherboard
 What I have: AMD 6300 6 core 3.5ghz
 Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3
 2 x 4gb 1866 Ballistix Tracer ram
 Gigabyte 750 GTX
 Same PSU
 Same Peripherals
My Problem: So I decided to upgrade my computer. I wanted to play Everquest Landmark and was only getting a handful of FPS. I'm on a budget so it was going to be a one at a time buying thing. I first bought the graphics card. That way while I made the money I could use it in the old system. And it worked just fine. I was then able to get the new motherboard. It sat on the shelf until I was able to buy the CPU and RAM. So I put the new components together, all was set, and I powered on. I went into BIOS to see what was new but didn't change anything. The computer came on started loading Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and powered down. POO! Tried it a few times and nothing. I went in in Safe Mode and was able to stay in forever. Oh yeah it was a clean install of Windows as AMD said something about needing to have certain drivers to be applied at OS installation. So in Safe Mode I downloaded drivers and system updates to bring the OS up to par. It still kept powering down the system as if someone had pulled the plug from the wall.
I started to wonder if the CPU was overheating. I also was wondering if the PSU was not good enough or had enough power. But I thought 700w is a lot of power. I put the old 9800 GT back in and everything worked just fine. I truly enjoyed the speed boost I got. I was able to start the computer and it would stay on until I turned it off. I was able to go to the Rocketfish website and check up on the PSU. I found out it is 700w peak and 550 continuous. 150 watts less then I had expected. Did some research on the internet about what I should have as far as a PSU. Mine still seemed to be in the green zone as far as amount of wattage output. The gigabyte site said I need a minimum of 400w PSU. That should leave some headroom for my drives, RAM and CPU which takes 95 watts.
So needless to say the old 9800 GT is still in there bottlenecking everything. I don't understand why the 750 GTX isn't working. Is my PSU not up to the job? I don't think the card is faulty or it would have done the same thing on the old set-up. Does anyone have any suggestions at all. I would appreciate them greatly. Constructive criticism only please.

 Thanks,
 rickywsf

 Rocketfish 700w PSU

Get something that is named properly :)
Rename what you have now into Firecrackerfish 700 PSU.

A real power 600W PSU should be ok but made properly. :)

Right I absolutely agree with that...but why would it work with the old system and new card and not the new system? The only main differences is 35 watts in the CPU.

Look at my signature ,the FX 6300 based system sucks in load ,in peaks ,when overclocked ,350W measured with a simple wattmeter ,while gaming.
This means that your actual PSU may not be able to deliver even something like this.

Then it s the rail splitting stuff.Maybe the 12V rails are wrong distributed in the PSU and the protection kicks in sooner.

LE: On my FX 6300 system the PSU used is OCZ 750W Fatality modular and the video card is a AMD 6950 unlocked to 6970 with 2Gigs of GDRAM.

The 9800 gt card takes more watts & amps than GTX 750. GeForce 9800 GT - 32A and a 500W PSU minimum, GeForce GTX 750 - 20A and a 400W PSU minimum.

Is this your PSU - http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Rocketfish-700-W-Power-Supply-Review/556

Don't go by what is on the side for watts & amps. Because if this is your PSU for the 12v rails you are really only getting 42a on 509 watts.

Even if you would use the 700w you still are only getting 58a. One thing you can do is only run the one drive that has windows on it.

Disconnect everything else. If by chance it runs than you need a better PSU.

Thanks dmdilks for the response. I went to the website and no that's not the PSU. It's RF-700WPS2. It says it's a well made product, but I don't know power supplies. So my PSU states in the manual:
DC Spec    +12v1     +12v2     +12v3     +5v     +3.3v     -12v     +5vsb
AMP            18.0A     18.0A      16.0A     28.0A    30.0A     0.8A     3.0A
Max Power  492W                                 140w                  9.6w    15w

So you stated that the 750 GTX takes 20A, but in the diagram Above it show that no 12v is 20 they are only 18A. Is that the problem? Granted the PSU is about 7 years old. Nope that doesn't make sense, then the 9800 wouldn't have worked either. But the 9800 doesn't have a power connector and the 750 does. If you can make any sense of this it's much appreciated.
EDIT: So I did some research on how some of this works. On the box for the 750 gtx it states "Minimum 400w or greater system power supply (with a minimum 12v current rating of 20A)". So I take it I have 3 rails and they all work independently and not cumulatively.
But there is still a rock in the gears. Why did it work with the old motherboard and cpu and ram? It's still the same PSU and still the same amperage. So is it cumulative? I feel I'm stuck in a vortex going round and round.
Again if you could shed light that would be great

Granted the PSU is about 7 years old.

Thats the problem. The capacitors in a power supply go bad over time. When they go bad/old they add power loss. The cables also have loosen contacts and they also loose power.
So go buy a modern power supply that has the cables you need and the length needed and has at least 500W(40 Amps on the 12V rail) real power.I would recommend 600W or so to have less noise.
Brands Corsair ,Antec ,Enermax ,Seasonic ,Sirtec  ,Chieftec and so on.
If you need help post here what you may be able to get.

Verzina I know you are trying to help but you are coming across as arrogant. You keep saying it's junk go buy a new one or it's bad "go buy a new one". I'm sorry but this isn't helping me. You're not backing up what you say with some reasons it's just "go buy a new one". You say "look at my signature". I did....and....is there some relevance? Sorry you're just not helping.

A 7 year old power supply coming from a not very known power supply maker  is not ok for your new PC ,simple as that.Power supplies have components that go bad due to heat and age.

I tried to exemplify with my own AM3+ rig that a proper power supply is needed having in mind the power draw.
Sorry if my suggestions look arrogant ,it was not my intention.
I will stop here with my participation on this thread.
Hope you will get it fixed in a much more efficient way.

I have some PSU's that I'm still using that are that old. I gave up on trying to talk about PSU years a go.

Because most people really don't know that much about PSU. Most multiple +12V rails are actually just a single +12V source just split up into multiple +12V outputs

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=157583

The amps on the PSU again is wrong. You are really only getting 41a with 492 watts. Not the 52a that is on the plate.  To get the 52a the max would be 624w

But the thing is why did it work on the old board. You will have sit down and figure the watts and amps between both setups.

The other thing is what bios are you using. Maybe you might have to update the bios. One other thing is that when you are looking at power for the video cards. It is min power too.

You could try the video card in the 2nd Pcie x16 slot just to see what happens. But I do have to agree with Vezina you might need another PSU too.
