installing win-OS on 890xfa-ud5 rev-2.1
« on: November 16, 2014, 01:52:52 am »
hello all -

i ran into an issue trying to install any win-OS on the 890xfa-ud5 rev-2.1 (bios 7)  - it appears the board was very particular about installing on sata-0 and not sata-1.   has anybody else observed this behavior?  with sata-1 i was getting bizarre errors like bad sectors, missing files, etc.    sata-0 was absolutely no problem.   it didnt seem to matter if it was win-7 or 8 - same behavior.

suggestions?

side-note - i went ahead and purchased a drive 'sata switch' http://www.satacable.com/4posaiisw3ba.html just in case i learn this behavior is normal.

It isn't normal I have that board and have no problems with either of the sata connectors and my hard drives.  Only difference is revision mine is an earlier revision.

i was a bit surprised too.  but i could not get a clean install to work on sata-0 but i could on sata-1.  it didnt seem to matter which SSD i was using or which power cable.   i tried this on both win-7 & win-8.

double-checked the bios version; F6.

i was able to get vmware installed on sata-1 earlier.  i might try centos-6.5 and see what happens.

Sata0 and Sata1 is the same controller so I am thinking it would be more of a hardware problem with the board.  All I use are SSD's and I always install on Sata0.  If it has a bad Sata port fine if you can live with it but I couldn't. Things like that bug me but that is the way I am....lol.

All 6 sata ports on off of the AMD SB850 controller. So it really doesn't matter which port your use.

Yes you like to start with 0 port, but it really doesn't matter with today's boards. Like autotech said it sounds like you got problems with the board.
