GA-EX58-UD5 CPU upgrade
« on: January 15, 2015, 01:28:39 am »
Hello!

I would like to upgrade my current CPU (i7 920 @ 2.66GHz) to a Xeon x5680 @ 3.33GHz.

I would like to ask you if this Xeon processor is compatible with my motherboard. Will the new CPU require other heatsink, cpu fan, what else? Or I could use what I currently have?

Finally, what kind of improvement should I expect? (How faster will my cpu be?) The Xeon is used and it is about 150euros. Is it a good price?

Thank you in advance for your help! :-)

Xeon x5680  isn't on the approved list for that board so no don't use it.

CPU Support list for this motherboard can be found here: http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=2958

You should be able to easily overclock your existing i7 920 to get the same performance.
Spend a few euros on a decent cooler and follow the guide here

More or less just raising the fsb to 166 will get you there...
