Question about GTX 970 G1 Gaming idle clock and temp's
« on: November 27, 2014, 05:28:41 pm »
Hey, i've had my GTX 970 G1 Gaming for about 25 days now, and in that time i have been thinking/wondering about my card idle clock speed. Because according to GPU-Z and Giga's OC-Guru the card normally idles with a core clock speed of 1177 mhz and 1.0 V using 22% TDP, but then a few times it idles at only 135 mhz and 0,862 V using 7-10% TDP.

And my idle temps went from 34*c to 26*c, so WTF Gigabyte why does it only do this some times..?

I think it could due to a messy BIOS, but i can't be sure about that, as i havn't seen others complaining about this issue.

Have any of you guys seen similar things with your GTX 970's? Or do i have a messed up card?

edit:
My card is a GV-N970G1 GAMING-4GD (Rev 1.1)

I have exactly the same card and your card has almost the same readings as mine so nothing is messed up, its fine.

Okay, do your card also at times idle at 1177 mhz without scaling down 135 mhz ? Because my card does that must of the time, and only rarely goes down to 135 mhz

It's normal.  My guess is you are in the Windows desktop and there is no game running.  It is clocked way back while you are in the desktop because it is saving energy.  See the little question mark next to "Bus Interface" section in GPUz?  Click it.  Then start the test.  You will see the clock speed, and everything else jump up because it is displaying (3d?) graphics on screen and it stresses the card a bit.  Not nearly as much as like Heaven or one of those other benchmark utilities, but it does kick the card into high gear and you can see where your clock jumps to.  You will also notice that the PCI-E 3.0 x16 bus interface is reported as "x16 1.1" which should change under the test also.
