I have a gigabit network. My device connects at 1000mbps, but I won't get this speed because actual vs. theoretical throughput varies. What you are connecting the NIC to matters. I think I started with the driver off the MB CD, but I believe I got a driver update somewhere along the line.
Your GW and IP cannot be the same, if it were, you wouldn't have a routable IP.
