GA990FXA-UD5 Rev3.0 no working USB, cannot install win7
« on: July 23, 2015, 04:23:06 pm »
Hi,

so i have two of this Mobo's and had Linux installed on them when i first did run into the USB Hell of this Motherboard.
I do remember calling up GA's Support but the guy on the other side of the line had no useful information for me.

Anyways i managed to set it up for Linux and get my Job done but it took way more time then i am used too.

I have tried to find an easy Solution for this back then and i spend quiet some time today rereading posts on this Forum but the Problem i have is not really covered.

So right now i want to give one of these Boards to a kid and he needs /wants Windows.
I picked up the spare parts i have lying around to set up a nice starter Gaming PC, and here are the specs.

GA990FXA-UD5 Rev3.0
AMD FX 6300, 6-Core (no OC)
AMD r9 290
RAM 2x4GB Ballistix PCs -12800 DD3 Bios detected them at 1600
PSU Cougar Power X 700

The Motherboard is on the table, i don't have a case yet for it, i just attached a Beeper in case it wants to tell me something which it does not. It Beebs once fine on Boot no crankiness.

First think USB Keyboard not recognized, i plug around the Motherboards USB ports and the Input device is recognized on the two USB3.0 ports.
Inside the Bios i see:

Onboard USB Devices enabled
F_USB3.0 Controller Enabled
R_USB3.0 Controller Enabled
Legasy USB Bios Support Enabled
XHCI Enabled
EHCI Disabled
Port 60/64 Emulation Disabled
IOMMU Controller Disabled

I tried various Settings on these options, nothing, only the USB3.0 ports do work.

I checked the BIOS updates and saw there was a newer one so i flashed it.
Again nothing.

I decided to ignore the problem thinking once Windows boots up it will find all the USB ports and Input devices on the gazillion ports on the back of the Motherboard.

Keyboard is hooked on to one of the USB3.0 ports and i fire up the Windows 7 Install via USB from the other USB3.0 port.

Everything works till right before Windows 7 asks for the Language, keyboard settings. Right before that screen all Lights on the keyboard and the USB Stick went off.

I am at a loss here what am i missing, is it the Reason why i see now a Rev.3.1 release of my Motherboard?
Surely there must be a way to get something so simple done and i am completely missing it.

Buying a PS/2 Keyboard will most likely not do anything since the only ports i have to boot from are the USB3.0 ones which die at the first Win7 Setup Select screen.

Please advice? RMA?

Called Support and i was told to connect a Fronstide USB3.0 adapter. If no input device works on the front USB3.0 then the Southbridge is dead and its a RMA case.
Unfortunately none of my Dealers around my area has a USB 3.0 connector i will have to either order one or buy a case with one.

But first i will run the same tests on the second Motherboard which is the same Model and Revision.

One thing you may want to try.  "Load Set Up Defaults' in BIOS and connect your mouse/keyboard to a USB 2.0 port.

@shadowsports

one thing you want to try is read my Original Post where i try to emphasize that no USB port except 3.0 are working, unfortunately i missed writing that after a BIOS update i usually reboot after Loading up BIOS defaults, who am i thinking thats a given

Anyways, turns out the Motherboard is faulty since the second one does recognize Input Devices and i will have to send the broken one in. Most likely it was DOA and i am guessing that i installed Linux on that working USB3.0 port and never Bothered to do further testing, lets hope i get this Board through RMA and that i didn't buy from one of the German Online Shops that stopped recognizing the 2 Year Warranty that is enforced by the EU.

Sorry Pandaface, I try not to assume things when helping others.  You mentioned your BIOS, and that you had tried various settings.  I can't tell you the number of times we've all tried to help someone only to find that they had disabled something required for correct operation.  I made that suggestion so all here would know exactly where you were starting from.  While this might have been obvious to you sitting in front of the PC, we can only guess until confirmed.  There is also a large percentage of folks who do not load set up defaults after a flash, why, because they flashed before and while recommend they've gotten away without doing it in the past.  Glad you solved the issue.  Sorry your board was or has become defective.   :(

Most upsetting part in all this. First time i called Support last December i did not get the info about Southbridge might be defect and how to test for it and the fact that one has to somehow get a hold of a USB3.0 connector which is not included with the Board to be able to test and find out that the Southbridge is toast.

I was under the impression that the Brand & Model would deliver at least minimal Health tools but now i am wiser.

I have had a lot of problems trying to replace my old GA-990FXA-UD5 rev 1.0 with a new GA-990FXA-UD5 rev 3.0.  But here is a tip I just discovered.  When first booting up, remove all USB peripherals except for the mouse and keyboard (or the wireless controller if used).  That stopped the board from hanging up at the Reset BIOS window which required mouse/keyboard input to select next choice.
Lesson:  unplug all other USB devices before booting new MB!

Now if only I could figure out how to reset the drive letters that the new MB scrambled when booted!

That can be done is Disk Management > Change Drive Letters and Path.  You'll change one at a time.  Keep in mind that you cannot change a drive letter on one disk that is currently in use on another. To work around that, change the letter on the second drive to something else.  This will allow you to change the letter on the first drive to the one you want.
