BIOS appears to have crashed on my Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4 MB
« on: August 09, 2015, 08:39:12 am »
Computer booting to a black screen after the BIOS splash screen with a single fast flashing cursor. No boot to Windows. I can see the BIOS splash screen but can only get into the Boot Order (F12). When I select a new Boot Order the screen goes black and nothing else happens. Hitting the Del key at startup has no effect.

The MB is still under warranty. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have discovered a Video which indicates that perhaps I should flash my BIOS using a 16GB USB drive. Should I do this or could it make matter worse? Also do I need to pull the memory or any other hardware before flashing the BIOS? Thanks again.

Dual BIOS is failing huh?

I'd try QFlashPlus - White USB Port

Using Q-Flash Plus
If both the main and backup BIOS fail during system boot, wait for 15-20 seconds, the system will automatically
search and match the BIOS file in the USB flash drive on the white USB port. The FBIOS_LED will flash when
the BIOS matching and flashing activities start.

Wait for 2-3 minutes and the FBIOS_LED will stop flashing when the main BIOS flashing is complete.
After the main BIOS is flashed, the system will reboot automatically and then DualBIOS™ will
continue to update the backup BIOS. After completion, the system will reboot again and boot from
the main BIOS for normal operation.

Be sure to Load Set Up Defaults after the back up BIOS has been automatically re-flashed.  Then configure.  You don't have to remove anything for this.

Thank you kind Sir. This is chartered territory for me so I shall strictly follow your advice and report back. Just between you and me this occurred half way through a Windows 10 upgrade. My office machine upgraded just fine but my backup/gaming machine did not.

I am afraid things are not going as planned. The FBIOS_LED is not flashing after I insert the USB drive and power up the computer. As before the Gigabyte splash screen appears for about five seconds and will not accept any input. It then drops to a black screen with single flashing cursor.

I did change a copy of the download BIOS to GIGABYTE.bin in the USB root.

Should I pull the CPU and memory before trying the Q-Flash?

Have you any other ideas, please?

I am getting the same problem with my MB.

Did you manage to solve this?

Yes I did, at least in part. I continually cold rebooted the machine until I managed to get F12 to access the BIOS. I was then able to use a USB Thumb Drive to flash the BIOS. However the problem of upgrading/installing Windows 10 ha still not been solved.

As near as I can tell the BIOS crashed at the point where the computer was rebooting from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Now Windows 10 will not accept my Windows 7 Registration Key. I have now purchased a new copy of Windows 10 and am shortly going to try a clean install.

I will report back ...
