GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 No Post Codes.

I have a new Mobo, GA-Z170-Gaming 7, that I am thinking about RMAing. The Mobo works very, well when it is running, apart from the onboard sound but I have never liked onboard sound anyway so that is not a major factor.

The problem is that sometimes it will not boot. The fans spin up and it all sounds normal but the Mobo codes read outs do not show anything and it will not Post. I have to do a Hard Reset to get it to post. I know when this has occur because I can see there are NO codes – they light up brightly- so when I do not see any codes I hold down the power button and try again.

This no-code scenario may go on for 2 or 3 hard resets and then the boot code lights show up and the machine boots fine. I have tried the Mobo with just ram and Vcard and the same thing occurs. I have the latest BIOS F5 flashed and running. Any thoughts?



I may have this Fixed.  I did not see the F6f BIOS.  After flashing to F6f the problem has not occurred.  Fingers crossed

Without knowing much about your system, I have the following suggestions:

Set RAM timings, etc manually.
Consider synchronizing the primary and back up BIOS'.  Often this resolves a boot loop behavior, but's it worth a try given your scenario. It also might be the power supply or a particular piece of hardware...  again, without knowing what you have beyond Z170x and F6f BIOS.

It has been a while and many restarts - Posts - since this occurred. I which I could tell you what fixed the problem but I did too many things to narrow it down to just one.  However, I will try to list what may have been the thing that stopped my occasional no Post issue.

The GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 has a switch at the bottom of the motherboard that turns dual BIOS to single BIOS mode.  I moved that switch to position 2 which is single BIOS mode.

Set the 4 ram timings in the CMOS to 15, 15, 15, 35, for my ram and left all the other memory settings on auto.

Set the ram Multiplier to 24 to run the ram at 2400 MHz which is its normal frequency.

Moved the power for fans and water pump off power connections with other devices attached.

Changed the 2 PCI-e power plugs to the video card to a different set.  My power supply has 6 of these 6-8 pin PCI-e connectors.

Unplugged and re-plugged the main power and 8 pin connector to the motherboard.

Changed my keyboard to an old PS/2 type keyboard.  Also, moved the mouse to the first blue USB 3 slot on the back-plate.

Removed my case's power reset switch from the motherboard header connection and left it off. 

Flashed the BIOS to the latest version.

All these things could be done in minutes but this took hours to figure out.  I think the first 3 and likely the first one may have been the fix but I am still unsure.
