Brand new delivered a couple of days ago. Combined with 32gb 2400 ddr ram and 6700k.

On first boot the power led came and the fans briefly spun. Within 1s they stopped. Led stays on, nothing else happens.

Removed discrete graphics card and booted first time with onboard.

Then failed again with same error. Reinstated graphics card, and it booted without issue.

Finished build and updated bios etc all fine. Powered on yesterday issue back. Took apart and reassembled. Booted OK.

Same issue this morning.

Have ordered a replacement board, but I wonder if anyone else has experienced this issue? It seems strange that it does nothing when it goes wrong, no beeps or error codes at all.

Removed all memory and same issue. I would expect it to complain in some way at the complete absence of ram?

We have seen a lot of the Z170 boards have problems with memory over 2133. Have you tried it at just stock settings. leave the memory at 2133. To see if you still have a problem. Yes memory could be on the list but is it XMP memory.

I managed to replicate issue with no memory inserted yesterday, so either psu, motherboard or CPU. I don't think it is psu because it has worked flawlessly for years.

Interestingly I held power button for 3s and it switched off. It then booted cleanly so it feels like a weird interaction between the motherboard and psu and possibly some flawed power management behavior...

What PSU are you using?

Bear in mind that, over time, even PSU's fail and although it may seem to work OK it may not be delivering enough power at start-up. I have seen this on many builds and although it may not be the cause of this particular issue, it is an area well worth examining.

It's a corsair tx750 and I think it has to be psu,mb, or cpu so once the spare mb arrives later I can eliminate that. I also have a couple of spare psu so will try that if necessary.

It is definitely a weird issue and not the normal failures I have seen when building PCs...

After you updated BIOS did you change any of the BIOS settings?

No, and based my testing last night it isn't even getting far enough in post to check for ram.

It is also running this morning but rebooting at random, so something is definitely wrong...

Do you have access to a stick of 2133MHz RAM?

As dmdilks mentioned in his reply, there seems to have been a fair few issues with faster RAM being used, although higher speed modules are on the QVL.

If you can use a stick of 2133MHz then I would suggest you try that, to see if you can get into BIOS properly. If you can BOOT OK then, you will be able to set the correct RAM speed for your 2400MHz modules and in the vast majority of cases, this has been successful in getting past this particular issue.

I don't, but I get the issue even if I remove all Ram which I think rules this out.

When the issue isn't present booting without ram results in a sequence of beeps, so it isn't getting far enough to recognise the absence of memory?

Looking in windows reliability history I also notice it is rebooting at random with an unexpected shutdown. This started happening when I installed this mb,ram,CPU combination...

It reboots so quickly I haven't been noticing!

The plot thickens. I replaced the motherboard and all appeared fine. No more crashes and perfect booting. For a day!

The power problem returned but it was reliable once it booted.

Replaced psu a few days ago and it has been faultless since. It must therefore have been the psu, but it was measurably more reliable with the second motherboard so perhaps both had issues...
