GA-Z170M-D3H and DDR XMP compatibility issue

GA-Z170M-D3H and DDR XMP compatibility issue
« on: May 30, 2016, 11:54:17 am »
Hi.

I have an issue with ram compatibility in XMP mode - 8Gb DDR4 3400MHz Patriot Viper 4 (PV48G340C6K) (2x4Gb KIT).
Failed to complete Prime95, IntelBurnTest, etc. It's all good in standard (2133Mhz) mode but failed in XMP. Sometimes pc refuses to start if XMP mode is ON...particularly with this DDR kits. Bios version - F7.

I've tested it with several ram kits (i have 6 kits of this particular memory) - same results: failed tests in XMP mode; occasional issues with pc refuses to start if XMP is on.

Also, I tested these memory kits on other mobo - ASUS Z170M-Plus with latest bios (1803). All modules working fine. All synthetic tests completed w/o issues.

What should I do? Wait for newer bios version cause this is a compatibility issue with this particular ram? Or this might be a mobo hardware issue and I should take it to my retail warranty?

EDIT:

I noticed a thing:

GA-Z170M-D3H F7 bios (latest) - 2016/03/03 (Improve DDR XMP compatibility)

GA-Z170X-Gaming G1 F8i beta bios - 2016/05/16 (Improve DDR Compatibility)
GA-Z170X-Gaming G1 F8f beta bios - 2016/05/05 (Improve DDR Compatibility)
GA-Z170X-Gaming G1 F8b beta bios - 2016/04/08 (Improve DDR Compatibility)

These a lot of new bioses for Gaming G1 mobo with improved DDR Compatibility...but no new bioses for GA-Z170M. I understand, Gaming G1 one of your top mobos on Z170 chipset but surely this doesn't mean that your other motherboards on the same chipset shouldn't have appropriate support for newer ram modules? :P

Hello,

I don't know if Gigabyte tech support actually read the forum so your question might be best asked in an email / support request.

As to the problem, maybe a BIOS update will come at some point but the memory operation is also dependent on the CPU you are using. Was the ASUS Z170M-Plus motherboard using the same CPU that is in the Gigabyte board?

Yep. Same CPU. And I tested it with a bunch: i3 6100; i5 6600k; i7 6700k.

EDIT:

I created a support ticket...

But, it doesn't matter I think...imo, I(we) need a new bios with updated uefi module for newest ram modules...like Gaming G1 and other top mobos already have.

The boards can run different settings too depending on the BIOS, for example with my board when I use the 3200 XMP it does the following, (Same hardware)

Gigabye Z170A UD5-TH:
vccSA: 1.283v
vccIO: Doesnt show in the BIOS
Command Rate: 1T

MSI Z170A Krait Gaming
vccSA 1.288v
vccIO 1.250v
Command Rate: 2T

I manually set those to vccSA 1.100v, vccIO 1.100v, 2T.

Might be worth checking just for comparison purposes if you haven't done so already, do both boards run the exact same settings when XMP is enabled,  timings / voltages.

@ElectroStingz, thanks for the tip about manual mode :) I manage to find a workaround: BCLCK clock = 100Mhz; memory multiplier = 33.33 (3.33Ghz). It's all was on "auto" before...and I can't even set multiplier manually to match 3400Mhz with my default XMP mode - no manual multiplier for my memory. Apparently, I can set higher BCLCK clock manually and OC/DC ram via predefined multipliers...but if I leave BCLCK on auto = previously described issues...

Like I said, we need a new bios with updated uefi module for newest ram modules...

EDIT:

Well...at least for now, I can run my memory at 3.33Ghz instead of 2.13Ghz :)
