Z170X Gaming 7 motherboard reboot issue

My motherboard has been working fine for a month or so on a new build.   After an MS security update, a firmware update occurred (but unfortunately I didn't catch what it was, I just said yes, my mistake) and it seemed to go fine.  But now I have a problem with rebooting.  The machine powers up and the fans go on, but nothing happens.  This is from a cold start or when I reboot via Windows 10.  If I manually power down the machine, and attempt again (sometimes it takes 4 or 5 tries), it finally boots and works perfectly.  I have reset to optimum defaults in the bios, but that does not solve the issue.   Any suggestions?  It's driving me nuts.  I am not an expert at these things.  Thank you.

This might help you find out which update was installed.

• Start menu then go to settings.
• Choose update & security
• Press on Advanced options
• Press on View your update history

What CPU and RAM are you using?

I have an Intel i7 6700K and G Skill 16 GB Ram F4-3400C16-8GTZ.  I will check the update as you suggest, but will that show a firmware update from Gigabyte?  I believe that is somehow related to why this is occurring.

All of what ElectroStingz has said is true.  If you have the full compliment of gigabyte utilities installed that came on the CD with your MB, then AppCenter and @BIOS were installed.  If so, this might update the BIOS for you automatically with a very non-descript press here to agree prompt.

Sometimes through the Windows update you get CPU microcode updates, this flashes the CPU's internal firmware and usually doesn't cause any major issues.

If the above has occurred you can try flashing your BIOS to a version that has a microcode update, like F5.
Only do this if the PC is 100% stable.

Which BIOS is it on atm?

The current bios I am running is F6.  That was an update that I know I did earlier, so I don't believe that was what updated.  When I go into settings, I only see all of the Microsoft updates.  Still have not figured this out.

Hmm, maybe coincidence?
Your BIOS options, are you overclocking or using the XMP setting?

Things like manually changing the Vcore, set back to AUTO
Stop all overclocking
Disable the XMP setting.

I would look at the video driver. Yes you really don't need a driver to boot, but we are talking about the piece of crap windows 10. This is why you don't let windows update any drivers. I do run it as a test, but to me it is still in the beta stage.

I would uninstall the video driver reboot or shut down and see what happens. You can turn off the hardware updates. Windows should list all updates that they have done.
