Gigabyte GA-B150M-DS3H
« on: October 03, 2016, 02:59:34 pm »
Hello
I am going to built a new PC consisting of a GA-B150M-DS3H motherboard, an Intel Core i5-6500 and 16gb-DDR4.
When reading the manuel of the motherboard, i found under "1-2 Product Specifications" - "Onboard Graphics" -
"Maximum shared memory of 512 MB".
What does this mean? Is it not possible to use the internal GPU of the CPU with more than 512mb?
I will use the GPU also for gaming and therefore 512mb seems to be very little.
Thanks

Yes that is true you can only use 512mb. The best thing you could do is get a cheat video card like 2gb. You will be better off then using the on-board / CPU GPU. The 512mb video is really only good for basic stuff like the internet, Facebook or some lite gaming.

That's very disappointing. On the one hand I wanted to invest in a midrange gaming card later and don't
wanted to waste money on a cheap card yet.
On the other hand the integrated card of the cpu isn't so bad for simple games. But 512mb is far to less.

It's a pity. I always bought gigabyte boards. But this is too much limitation. Other brands make it better.
They offer up to nearly 2gb and even more.

About 90% people build computers always put in some kind of video card. Because most people build them for gaming. They did it so you have some kind video to use Or get things started if you have too.

Yes Laptop's did it different because you can't really upgrade the video. That is just like people still use sound cards. Why when they great on board audio.

As I already mentioned, other brands do it much better. Why not let the user decide, how much memory he wants
to use. Every user editing bios-settings will be able to do so.
Once again my question, why does Gigabyte limit the amount of memory in such a way?

Because 80% to 90% people build computers to do gaming. Asus gives you 1024mb and Msi didn't say. If they gave you up to like 4gb then why would you need one of their video cards.

It is about sells so I'll give them 512mb and maybe they will buy one of our video cards. You have to think like they think. This what the Z97 boards had. Internal Graphics Memory Size - Allows you to set the onboard graphics memory size. Options are: 32M~1024M. (Default: 64M).

Plus it does say that but if I remember we had many threads on this where they really couldn't set it. Sorry other then that I can't tell you why the set it at 512mb.

Hey guys...

buze,
Its also about striking a balance.  People who use on-board graphics are not usually the ones with serious performance requirements.  Those who are buy a dedicated GPU.  Going from 512 > 1024mb memory allocated for on board video is not going to yield a substantial performance increase or FPS.

Please also note that not everyone installs greater than 8GB of RAM.  While the minimum memory requirements for most OS's remains low, we know from experience that anything less than 8GB on a x64 based system can be performance limiting for anything except email and casual web browsing.

So to avoid bottlenecks and maintain equity, lower memory allocation limits are established.  If a user wants more, he/she can buy a dedicated GPU and it becomes a mute point.  Shouldn't be a deal breaker for you.  :)

Cheers
