GA-H170M-D3H: Can't always enter setup or boot menu
« on: November 03, 2016, 02:19:25 pm »
I have a brand new GA-H170M-D3H (Firmware version F6) and I have some intermittant issues entering the setup or the boot menu:

Every once in a while, hitting DEL or F12 does absolutely nothing, the system proceeds to my bootloader. There, the keyboard works fine. I also tried different keyboards and different USB ports, but the intermittant issue persists.

After some fiddling, I'm sometimes able to enter the setup or the boot menu (from where I then enter the setup). After that, it might take a few reboots until the issue comes back.

Since Windows 8 and later are able to let users enter the setup on the next reboot, is there a way to do the same from within Linux or an EFI shell? I suppose this is achieved by Windows setting some EFI NVRAM variable? Unfortunately, I don't use Windows on this machine at all.

Greetings:

Common causes for this are:

Enabling Fast or Ultra Fast Boot in BIOS

Other possibilities include:

Using a wireless keyboard

I noticed you were using wired USB.  This should work, but some Linux distributions may work better than others.  I haven't reviewed your MB Manual or BIOS settings, but am not aware of other possible causes, however, they could exist.  Timing can play a role in your success.
