New hard drive

I have a Gigabyte T1005 and unfortunately the hard drive has been damaged (probably by improper shutdown, but it kept freezing and I could not shut it down normally).
I am considering a replacement of course, in particular WD3200BPVT or WD3200BEVT. Apparently the first one is a bit better. What do you think?
I do have backups (disk images) and I hope they will work, although the last one told me it could not read some files during the backup, which I suppose is normal if the disk is damaged, but I could always reinstall or replace corrupt files if the backup is successfully restored.

As a general question, what should one do when a notebook freezes? There is no way to shut it down normally, although I have read that using the power button is better than pulling the plug and removing the battery if it works, and unfortunately I did the latter.

Thanks for your advice.
