I have Rev 1.0 of this motherboard, and have been using SSDs with it for years. I have not noticed any speed issues, but I've not used any top-of-the-line SSDs. If I were you, I'd just get a low-cost SSD, like one of the Crucial MX300 series. Install only the default drivers, and don't sweat the small stuff.
If you really cared about "optimizing" hard drive speed, you'll need to look into a PCI-E SSD which is more expensive and likely more complicated to install on a board that old. Specifically, you'll probably need a non-NVME drive.
