How do I get 4 sticks of RAM to work in GA H87M D3H

How do I get 4 sticks of RAM to work in GA H87M D3H
« on: January 19, 2017, 12:35:29 am »
Hey, I have seen a lot of questions on this subject and few answers so hoping the folks here can shed some light.
My son wanted to up his ram from 4 to 8 GB so he purchased 2 more 2 GB GSKILL F3-12800CL9D sticks to match what he alreasy had. When I installed the computer just powered on and off by itself, never booted up at all. I noodled around with different configs and the new sticks are fine. The computer only works with sticks in either slots 3 and 4, or 1 and 2.
GA-H87M-D3H / Bios is F10 (07/16/2014)
Any ideas appreciated, I did try to update the BIOS but it was not very straightforward...
Thanks,

Did you try with the sticks in 1 2 & 3 and 1 2 & 4. Plus did you check in the bios to make sure that you getting the right reading on the ram when installed in 1 & 2 or 3 & 4.

Thanks for the reply. I did manage to update the BIOS to version F11 dated 8/18/2015.
Not sure what I should be looking for in the BIOS however, what do you mean by the 'right' reading on the RAM? Oh also three sticks did not work as suggested ie 1,2 and either 3 or 4...
Appreciate the help...

You wrote, "you've seen lot of questions on this subject and few answers". What your experiencing is not an issue with Gigabyte.

G.Skill FAQs:

Q:
I want to install more memory, in addition to my existing memory kit. What are my options?

A:
We do not recommend mixing memory kits, regardless of brand or model.

By mixing memory kits together, there may be compatibility issues such as unable to boot or unable to operate at rated specifications.

Each of our memory kit are thoroughly tested to ensure compatibility within each memory kit. And because we have not tested our memory kit with your existing memory kit, we cannot guarantee compatibility when multiple kits are used.

I have seen some people, i.e. dmdilks, scoff at that and say memory manufacturers are just trying to sell you more RAM. Maybe he can offer you better help. The fact is memory manufacturers do not guarantee mixing multiple kits will work at all or how they will work. Corsair recommends trying to set the memory clock to a slower speed in an attempt to get them working.

You asked, "What are the right settings"? When using multiple kits the memory manufacturers specifications no longer apply. As Corsair recommended, a slower memory clock may get them to work together. DRAM Timings would be guesswork. Some people recommend higher voltages when doing so may just make things run hotter.

Using multiple kits is like doing your own compatibility testing, which can be expensive if things are not compatible. Using a single kit is guaranteed for life to be compatible.

To prove that the memory isn't the problem does the new memory run with the old. Take one stick of the new and one of the old and run them together. If they don't then try to get two 4gb sticks kit of memory or 4 sticks of 2gb kit memory.

Thanks for the replies again. I never thought to check the G Skills website! Makes sense I suppose, I had some experience doing this with another MoBo and it was straightforward.
The computer is humming along with one old and one new stick in right now, but I don't think it is wise for me to go in noodling with BIOS timings etc. 2 x 4gb sticks is probably the best suggestion. :o

You know the funny part of this is that I have been mixing memory for over 20 yrs. Have never ran into a problem. Plus I have built 100's of computers too. I just bought a computer that only 8-gb of memory.

Went to ebay bought another 8gb stick that was the same brand & numbers and it is running fine. Let see here if I have a computer with 4-gb sticks of 16-gb memory in my X99 board. I want to get another 16-gb.

But by the rules now I have to go buy a kit with 8-4gb sticks of 32-gb kit or 4 8-gb sticks of  32-gb kit. So now what do I do with the other old 16-gb memory throw it in drawer or trash and forget about it. "OK right"

There could be other problems causing the problem. It could be the CPU, the CPU socket or even some thing to do with the board. It could be almost anything not just the memory. Just say he does get a 4 stick kit and still does the same thing what do you tell him is wrong.  :-[

I would still try to get two 4gb sticks kit of memory. You know 2 sticks run fine vs 4 sticks.
