Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7 problems.
« on: August 20, 2017, 05:03:05 pm »
Hey all, I'm having some issues with my Z170X Gaming 7 Motherboard and I have a i7 6700k paired with it.

The issues I'm having is that if I select ANY of the overclocking presets and enable XMP on my Blitz 1.1 2800Mhz RAM when I stress test it in P95 to check temps and whatnot I get BSoD. I'm at my wits end here and unsure where to go from here.

I am on the latest Bios and my OS is Windows 10. Can somebody please help me out :)

Hello,

What frequency are you trying to run the CPU at with the preset?
It is better to manually OC for greater control and stable results.

I used the 3 presets that was there, 4.4Ghz, 4.5Ghz and 4.6Ghz. All are unstable with or without XMP enabled...

And I tried manual overclocking on this but gave up due to the confusing options lol

4.4Ghz should be very easy by manually changing a few things.

  • CPU Vcore = 1.280v
  • CPU Ratio = 44
Try just the above with XMP disabled and see what happens.

When you enable XMP these voltages will increase automatically and usually above what is required.
  • VCCIO = 1.15v
  • CPU System Agent Voltage = 1.15v
This will be ok for 2800Mhz

A long time ago I stopped using a Gigabyte Z170X-UD5 TH board with my 6700K CPU so I cannot be precise on the exact wording for your BIOS.

When you set the Vcore to 1.280v, this will drop when the CPU is under load / P95.
For 4.4Ghz you need at least 1.25v.

The CPU will also down clock when under load so you need to adjust the power limits.

  • CPU current limit = Max out
  • Turbo boost long wattage = Max out
  • Long Time = Max out
  • Turbo boost short wattage = Max out
  • Short Time = Max out

Use the Intel XTU software to determine the above options, change in bios to see what changes in the XTU software.
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24075/Intel-Extreme-Tuning-Utility-Intel-XTU-

Your BIOS lists these as the following, MIT section
  • Power package limit1 (Watts)
  • Power package limit1 (Time)
  • Power package limit2 (Watts)
  • Power package limit2 (Time)
  • Core Current Limt (Amps)
Type 9999 for each one to max out.

Other than those options, the rest is up to you.
Load Line Calibration for the CPU Vcore can help stabilise the voltage drop.

And if you don't have a reasonable cooler your temps will shoot past 80 degC in a Prime95 blend / max power test @ 4.4Ghz.

Thank you very much mate, I'll try that now and report back :)

Here's some photos from my CPU settings in the bios. I can't put 9999 on the settings like you told me to, it just reverts back to auto :(

Does the + button on your keyboard do anything?
If so, + all the way till you hit the limit for the ones mentioned.

Never thought to try that, once again I'll report back haha!

Nope + doesn't do a thing :/

Edit: + works!

Can't go all the way to 9999 as 4090 is the highest it'll allow me to go. Should I try that?

Yes, 4090.

Sorry I should have made the 9999 bit clearer, on some boards when you type 9999 it will automatically set the option to the max value. So if 4090 is the max value, 9999 when you press enter changes to 4090.

So continue with the + till you find the limits.  :)

How did 4.4Ghz go without doing any of those options?
CPU Ratio 44
Vcore 1.280v

Did this actually work or did P95 down clock when under load.

I tested it at the settings you gave me and it's rock solid. Left it on P95 for 12 hours and it was sat at 4.4Ghz constantly at around 50-55c. You're a goddamn god man....thank you so much!!

And I still haven't tried XMP lmao!

:)

The Gigabyte Z170X-UD5 TH board I used was very stable with a load line calibration option enabled, little voltage drop under load, obviously tweak and learn about the various settings.

Nice temps too.
