Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H RAM issues Black Edition

Hi there all...

Iv got a problem with my new Black Edition RAM from AMD
OCZ PC3-12800 AMD Black 2x2GB OCZ3BE1600C8LV4GK
timings are 8,8,8, 24 1600MHz @ 1.65

Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3h

Out of the box both DIMMS plugged do not work. One DIMM with all ram settings in the bios set to "auto" will work in any DIMM slot.

THe second DIMM will not work by itself in any DIMM slot at settings set to "auto"

If i install the one DIMM that works i change the Voltage only and increase to 1.65V THEN both DIMMS installed will work. I then have to increase the voltage .1 at a time to increase the speed. both DIMMS runing @ 1.68v 1333MHz

Question 1 - Why do i have to increase the voltage for the RAM in order to make both sticks work?

Question 2 - Why does the one specific DIMM not work by itself but when paired with the other one it does.?

Either the bios is not recognising the memory properly, or one of the sticks is faulty,
odd that they work once you start changing voltages which makes me lean towrards a bios issue.

It sounds like you have some faulty ram even though you can get it to work with some manipulation. OCZ in particular does like a bit more voltage and generally it is best to set the modules to their specified settings rather than auto. However if you run memtest86 on the memory you will get a better idea of the actual status.

It is odd, i agree, i tried it with the BIOS that came with the motherboard F5 , they didnt work together unitll after i changed the voltage. I then updated the BIOS to the latest F7c and still the same thing. i dont understand it, is there a problem with my boad or a problem with my ram? its odd and weird.

I have to agree with Dark Mantis here. It is also worth noting that for some reason, there seems to be a lot of issues recently with OCZ RAM not being happy at stock settings. The issue isn't just with Gigabyte boards either, a quick search on the net will show up problems with other Mobo manufacturers as well.

Yes I have noticed that as well. I had the same problem with another build of mine not so long ago with an Asus board and there was no way that the OCZ memory was going to work on it properly, in the end I swapped it out for some Corsair modules and everything was rosy.

I have just tried 2 DIMMS of Kingston with the same timings and Voltage and individually they both work with all memory settings in the BIOS set to "auto".
WHen i get to windows and load up CPU Z the timings are 9-9-9-24 @1.65v....thos are on auto, i dont have to change anything to get that.

By themselves or together in any combination and they work.

Im going to return the AMD black edtion OCZ crap.
