can anyone help with installing a sata drive on xp 64 bit on g31m-es2l board

It's possible that you have a faulty cable from the PSU to the drives and just moving it makes the connection which fails again afterwards.

It would really help if you could post full system specs.

Also did you try updating BIOS as mentioned earlier? I have come across a similar issue on an AMD board that was resolved with BIOS update.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.
