Problem with new build using GA-H55M-USB3
« on: June 22, 2010, 03:28:09 pm »
I bought these components last Sunday and tried to build it that same day. However, I can't get it to POST.

My components are,
Intel i3-530
Gigabyte H55M-USB3 (rev 1.0)
Team Xtreem Dark DDR3-1600 4GB Kit
Seasonic PSU 620W
XFX 5850
640GB WDC Black

When I first tried to turn it on, the mobo LEDs lit up and the fans were turning.. but it would turn off after a few seconds and then turn itself back on. This would just go on and on. I then tried going with only the basic components such as the mobo, memory, cpu and video card. Same results. I tried going with the integrated GPU, removing the video card. Also the same results. Here are other things that I've tried:
- tried going with only 1 stick of memory at a time (yes, my modules are inserted on the white slots)
- tried removing the battery and shorting the jumpers (after I did this, the mobo and cpu would no longer turn off after a given interval -- but still no POST)
- tried using my HDMI and DVI cables alternately
I absolutely wasn't able to get anything to show up on my monitor. I've read in other forums that this was a very common problem.

So do you think this is a dead board? Are there other things you guys could suggest?

Even though you have a good PSU it is quite possibly down to that. Most people don't realise the importance the PSU plays in the setup. I had a Zalman 750W when I first built my new setup and couldn't get it to run properly(much the same as your problem) I eventually swapped it out for a Corsair HX850 and everything was perfect.

@Dark Mantis
It could be possible that you are right on this one..

But here's what happened so far. I brought the board to the distributor here to have them check it and possibly have it RMAed. I brought the memory sticks with me just in case I could have them test it for compatibility. Luckily, the guy was nice enough to test it and it booted up! He even loaded windows 7 and ran a stress test for 10 minutes which came back successful. He used an i5 750 processor for testing it by the way. He told me to check that the stock heatsink is mounted properly.

So when I got back home, I remounted the hsf on the board and made sure it was properly secured. I attached the case speakers to the board this time and when I turned it on, I finally got something out of it. I'm hearing continuous short beeps. According to the manual, it is a POWER ERROR. I tried booting up with only one stick, the beeps would disappear but nothing would still show on my screen. When I place BOTH mems back in place, I hear the beeps again. This got me confused.

I will try to return the PSU tomorrow to have it replaced with something better. But what do you guys think of this? Is this just a PSU problem?

Yes, it's almost certainly a new PSU required. Bad enough but at least you know. Get a good quality 80+ certified one  like the Corsair HX series. A bit more expensive but quality and guarranteed for seven years 8)

Brought it to the shop yesterday to have them test the PSU and it was working fine! I brought my other components just in case and had them test it as well. The technician got the same continuous short beeps. He swapped the sticks with an OCZ DDR3-1066 and guess what? It started to work! Apparently, it's a memory compatibility issue. I got it replaced with a OCZ DDR3-1600 Fatal1ty 4GB kit and it's now working fine. Stressed test it in Prime95 for around 5 hours with no errors. I was glad I didn't need to shell out a few more bucks for a better PSU.

Finally, case closed! Although it wasn't a PSU problem, still want to thank Dark Mantis for trying to help out! Thanks man!

Sorry I got the diagnosis wrong but it is always difficult to make a decision without tha hardware there to test. Anyway the main thing is that you have got it all sorted out and are happy with your machine again. ;)
