GA-890FXA-UD5 won't power on

GA-890FXA-UD5 won't power on
« on: June 25, 2010, 04:02:16 am »
I received the above mentioned board on Thursday of last week with no I/O plate and no Bracket for the CPU fan to connect to.  I hada Gigabyte send me those items no problem.  I iPower, Reset, and Clear CMOS buttons all light up.  I have gone through the manual and I have checked over and over again to make sure its all plugged in correctly and it is.   but the board won't power on.   Could the board be bad?  I wondered this since the box was missing the bracket and I/O panel.  I probably should have just RMA'd the board as soon as I saw missing pieces.

Any body else had this problem? or know a work around?

Two questions.  Is that ram on the compatable list and what video card are you using?

As an after thought what bios are you using?,  I have the same board and have no problems with a 4870 but i bought mine new and not open box which seems yours was.

I would RMA the board anyway as there were items missing. It sounds like the retailer might have sold on a returned item from his stock. Who did you purchase it from, not DSG by any chance? In the first instance take it back to the retailer and demand a replacement, it is within your rights!

Secondly, if the board won't power on(and you're sure ALL the connectors are in place) it doesn't necessarilly maen the motherboard is faulty. It has safety features that will stop it POSTing if there is some other faulty component attached. So remove anything it really doesn't need to boot and try again. But I would definitely get the board swapped out. Maybe that faulkt was why the retailer had it returned in the first place!

ATI radeon 4850x2

I ordered a NEW board from Tiger Direct.  I was afraid this was what would happen.  I don't know if the RAM is on the list, I just matched up speeds and type.  I may just tell them to refund me the money and get the board again else where.

As long as you get a board that you are sure is new and complete at least you have a starting point. At the moment there are too many variables in the equation.

I don't mean to sound rude, but are you sure you didn't put in too many damn spacers, it is the No. 1 issues with new builds :)

the cpu bracket missing would have made me return the board immediately I would not have even tested it
io shield is an oversight, but the cpu bracket I am sure would have to have been removed?

Was the board in a factory sealed box when you purchased it? You can usually tell there are those round clear tape type stickers.

I started to RMA it immediately and thought what the hell.  no, just enough spacers, I usually don't even use them all, just where I need them.  I thought the same thing about it not being sealed, but the Gigabyte person I got ahold of said they don't seal them up.  but the static bag was torn which I thought big whoop, I have already called Gigabyte to RMA the board.  Thanks guys.

Probably the best solution for now. At least when you get the new one you will be more certain that the problem is not with that and you should have all the pieces this time.

Has anyone noticed something strange here. He is RMA'ing the board to gigabyte which means he either bought it over 30 days ago or he would of done the rma thru tiger direct   OR   he bought it open box with no return to tiger direct and only 30 day warranty thru gigabyte. Both tiger direct and newegg have same price so knowing the reputation of tiger direct id say it was a return or open box.

Newegg would of been a better choice. Also all the other post had good ideas even the spacer one which has never happened in 150 or so builds.

Sounds quite feasible. It was fairly clear from the outset that it had been tampered with. I would have thought that the OP would have checked it all most carefully if buying it as open box though :-\
I must say that I have seen stupid things like too many standoffs and mistakes that you just can't believe. Some people think just because they are supplied they have to use them all ::)
