Great news that it was something so simple. It really makes a change.
It's often the most simple of things that we overlook when we are delving into the complexities of the machine. No you won't have damaged it by moving the switch, luckilly you had it the right way round and basically it wasn't supplying enough power to the machine. I have seen it done the other way round and it can make quite a mess!
