do i have to format the hard drive for the computer to be able to work?

You can only use a hard drive that is clean and formatted if it has come from another computer. So format the drive and then do a fresh install of Windows on it.

I am not sure but I notice that it's compatible with Vista so I think that it probably is. The only thing is you would want more than 1Gb of RAM to run it properly. If you go on the Micro$oft website there is a tool on there for checking system compatibility for Windows 7.

Depends on your system and your requirements apart from how much you want to spend. I would get a SATA2 drive, size depending on your budget.
