Aorus Gaming 7 x399 and gksill 3200mhz ram keeps re-setting BIOS

So I've just got my machine up and running, it has an Aorus Gaming 7 X399 MB and 32Gb of G-skill RAM (Model : F4-3200C14Q-32GFX) F3g BIOS for the board

I've got the RAM in the correct slots but when I activate XMP profile 1 to kick the RAM from 2400mhz to 3200mhz I'm getting strange things.

Initially it will run OK, windows task manager shows RAM speed as 3200mhz, HWinfo64 shows it as 1600mhz, i assume this is OK as you double this for DDR RAM? (I'm not a hardware expert)

However it will randomly reset the BIOS upon bootup and switch everything back to default including RAM speed.

I've read that manual RAM settings are more stable than XMP profiles, is that the issue here? if so are there universal timings I can set myself? I'm not an overclocker and really don't want to start playing around with memory timings

I notice when it reboots after resetting the BIOS it's showing an motherboard code of '40' which I can't find in the manual.

Greetings,
This could be related to any one of these things:

-Faulty BIOS programming (XMP profile values doesn't match actual values RAM can achieve)
-One or more of the DIMMs is faulty (you can teste them with memtest)
-Overly aggressive BIOS settings for CPU and/or memory (extreme OC?)
-Incorrect timings or voltage settings (XMP values may not match)

The RAM is on the QVL for your board.  Using manual settings might help.  If you have an XMP 2.0 option in BIOS, try it.  3200Mhz requires an OC, don't be too aggressive.

Memory SPD detects at 2400Mhz, 1.20v...  but should run at 14-14-14-34 1.35v.  Again, it might come down to manual settings and finding the correct voltage for CPU and RAM that will get you stable.  A future BIOS rev might resolve...  but nothing has been released since 10/17 as you know.

Thank's for the feedback, I tested the RAM with Memtest V4 and it checks out so that's something I guess. Unfortunately I only have one option in my XMP profiles and it's 3200mhz. I'm not an overclocker and although I'm familiar enough with BIOS settings to play around with some bits and pieces I'm more reluctant to mess about with voltages for fear of damaging some quite expensive bits of kit.

I've been looking online for some manual settings that might work for me to duplicate but can't find any, would you have any idea where to look?

Also, are timings, memory clock speed and voltages all interlinked? can I increase the clock speed without adjusting the timings or is that just wasting my time?

When you go from automatic to manual, settings such as timing voltages, multipliers, etc become unlinked (generally speaking).  However, we've seen issues where some settings remain tied to one another for no apparent reason.  The information in my last post should allow you to use manual setting for the RAM, (disable XMP) and set in M.I.T. section of BIOS.  Be conservative and you won't hurt anything.  In these situations, "less is always more".

I tried incrementally increasing the voltages and inputting timings manually but the BIOS kept re-setting. Then I gave up and loaded default settings and it still re-set. I re-seated the RAM sticks and replaced the CMOS battery then loaded the XMP profile and it's now working fine!

Always rule out the basics first I guess.

Good work!  Glad you figured it out.
