GA-Z87-DS3H USB3.0 Driver missing

There are two USB3.0 sources on the mobo, I think. One is part of the rear connection panel and the other is the F_USB30 plug near the RAM slots on the edge of the board.

This edge connector feeds a front panel header with blue USB3.0 jacks. I am not getting 3.0 there, but I am in the back. Device mgr shows an old 2006 (and "up to date") stock windows driver being used.  I found a USB3.0 driver on the Gigabyte site v3.0.0.16 for the Intel Enhanced 3.0 Chipset. I installed that but had no effect on the F_US30 jack.

My external 3.0 HDD is shown only as a USB Mass Storage Device and when unplugged, says USB Composite Device

The Intel Enhanced USB 3.0 Controller and Hub are both there, I guess only for the other 3.0 jacks in the back. Is there a way to associate this "outlier" 3.0 jack to the Intel Controller or Hub? The drivers for the controller and hub are different and are not located in System32 but in Program Files (x86)/Intel R.

I know its a lot, but I have a feeling I am not the first with this issue. Your advice on how to proceed would be most appreciated. Thanks

I remember some variants of the (gigabyte) Z87 chipset had a lot of issues of USB detection and connectivity.  Many were related to detection of keyboard and mouse on the rear ports.  I though later revs (1.1) had resolved them, but that doesn't seem to be so in this case.  I do not think your board ever had a 1.0 variant.  What OS are you using?

Many spent considerable time flashing different BIOS revs and testing various settings.  XHCI hand off (Auto, On, Off) etc. depending on their OS. You installed the Hotfix download as well, correct?  I believe they worked under W7, and are not needed for 10 which has native support built in.  You also have to have chipset .inf drivers installed first as well if I recall correctly.

I am running OS 7/64. Board is rev 1.1. I installed the new Intel drivers. Hot Fix's are for Win 8.

Well, I did not get the usual "better if plugged into 3.0...." message! So...

I downloaded  USB Device Tree Viewer V3.1.7 and it shows that my HDD on J: drive is plugged into the 3.0 Controller/Root Hub but is running at High Speed, NOT Super Speed, so it is still 2.0. So, is it the HDD??

I plugged in a 3.0 Flash Drive and IT IS 3.0!!  OK, so now the HDD is the problem. The HDD has the 3.0 hardware and cable. Are there ways of switching or making a USB speed preference for an HDD??? It is a Seagate Replica.

There is not a documented way to change the connection speed.  The speed is negotiated depending on the chipsets and drivers.  The ports operate independently so its not like a bus where the slowest device can make all of the connected devices operate at the slowest negotiated speed. 

Some devices will not support Super High Speed, but instead only High Speed.  Things that influence this are cabling and drivers.  These can be changed. The chipsets in the host or device cannot.

Ensure you are not using a hub.
