How do you make a ga-78lt-usb3 6.0 motherboard use AHCI mode? Changing BIOS settings made no difference.

To avoid confusion, what OS are you running?  Which port is the disk running your OS connected to?

For ACHI, these are the BIOS settings that must be used:

On Chip SATA Controller > Enabled

On Chip SATA Type > RAID or AHCI
Controls ports SATA2_0~3 (Controller operate mode set globally)

There are additional options which allow you to isolate ports for individual configuration.  Refer to your manual.

Changing the operate mode of a controller with live disks installed running an OS used to be a big deal.  Vista actually disabled drivers for unused operate modes in registry and you had to jump through hoops to get past STOP error "Inaccessible Boot Device".  This is no longer true if your OS is Windows 7, 8 or 10.

Since we do not know this history, I would recommend the following.  Make of back image of your OS.  Download the drivers you need for the controller operate mode you want to use.  RAID and AHCI use the same driver, if you select RAID the controller will operate with stand alone disks in AHCI mode.  If you don't create a RAID set or mark disks as members they operate as a standalone drive.  For simplicity you can use AHCI mode.

If you get into any trouble, Boot into SAFE Mode, load the drivers for the operate mode you wish to run and restart.  Enter BIOS and confirm the SATA Type and operate mode are set correctly for the driver.  F10 to save and exit.  The system should then boot normally.

Thanks for the advice! I followed the instructions and was able to finally switch the motherboard to AHCI mode.

The next challenge will be to find a Gigabyte motherboard that will use an AMD FX-6300 and provide sata 6.0 gb/s ports (the ga-78lt-usb3 6.0 has only sata 3.0 ports)
