GA-X299 WU8 Memory Population Questions
« on: April 24, 2019, 05:35:18 pm »
Hay Guys .... cannot believe it's been seven years since I was last here .

Nice to see Runn3R is still gracing the pages, and what about Dark Mantis? ... he still kicking ? anyway down to business.

You can see from my sig I moved on from the i7-970 and now the i7 4790K on a Z97 chipset is holding me back again so a new build is on the table ... pick the board (GA-X299 WU8) what a beastie! ... going to pair it with a i9-9900X so I can get into VROC with some new hardware I already have ... so some question about DDR4 memory .

Hi People, has been a while since building a new rig from scratch so google answers most questions but not all ... Thank god for forums.

Motherboard is picked (X299) so 8 memory slots ... so it's a matter of 8x8 units/sticks of mem (Xxxx) to get 64 gb verses 4x16 ?
1) Is it cheaper per gig to go with 16gb per stick opposed to 2x8 ??

2) is there any advantage/disadvantage with through-put and or latency/overclock ability populating half or all the slots with a given mem module making a total 64gb population ... many thanks for all who can help me out.

Hi Al,

long time no see or hear. Pleased your still around though. Dark Mantis fell by the wayside, quite sometime ago but I'm still here, throwing by two bits worth in, where appropriate.

The cheaper option would be to get 4 x 16Gb sticks to get your 64Gb of RAM. This is also probably the best way if you are anticipating going up to 128Gb in the future. Having never tried running this amount of RAM, I cannot say which way will work most efficiently. That said, I don't think there would be too much difference in performance, whichever way you go.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Haeeeeee! Absic, how they hangin Buddy, good to hear from some of the old crew.

Good solid advise me thunks too ... just sound better hearing from another source ... to be honest I have been trying to get raid 0 going on a Z97 board over PCIe... it's got a PLX chip but zero support in bios failing there there are some riser cards to be had that handle bifurcation on card but silly money ... I ended up getting a couple of Asus Hyper x 16 v2 cards and had a play ... Z99 is the minimum chip set unless your a bios guru. Oh well, on to the next project then. Getting my hands on four Intel 760P drives to give VROC a go in the new project , have you dipped your toes in the 6000mbs pond as yet?
