P55M-UD4 i5 750 multiplier question
« on: July 15, 2010, 09:58:50 pm »
hey all, got a question regarding the multipliers available on this motherboard and cpu combination.

if turbo mode is enabled and all 4 cores are loaded the cpu uses a 21x multi. however if 1 or 2 cores are only loaded then the system will use an even higher multiplier, up to 24x to turbo boost the 1 or 2 cores being used.

question is can i permalently use the 21x multiplier without it going up to 22,23,24x for single and dual core loading?

thanks.

It is possible to overclock your chip and limit it to whatever you set the multiplier to(within certain restrictions) but to do this you would have to manually make all the settings. I am not sure that it is possible to do any other way.

i currently run 180x20 for 3.6ghz, if i enable turbo when all 4 cores are loaded in linpak clock speed turbos up to 3780mhz since the 21x multi becomes active.

but if i lock linpak's threads to 1 or 2 max then the 24x multi takes effect and that makes the cpu unstable since clock speed is boosted heavily.

is there a way to just have the 21x multi in effect without it turbo boosting to 24x?

what settings would i need to use to get it to work if its possible?

I have a GA-P55-UD4 and a problem I had was Turbo Boost not working when enabled but it locked the multiplier for my i7 860 to x22 @2.9MHz (which should be x21 @2.8MHz) on all core without changing.

The setting that stopped Turbo Boost from working was C3/C6/C7 State Support to Auto when set to enable Turbo Boost worked.

So what should work for you is to enable Turbo Boost and set C3/C6/C7 State Support to Auto with the multiplier set to x21 on all cores for your i5.

disabling those C states resulted in turbo mode being disabled and max multi of 20 was only available.

sorry my mistake, i didnt read your post properly, insted of putting C states to Auto, i disabled them.

i have now put them to auto and its working exactly as i wanted it to. i can use 21x multiplier, when i run linpak, be it single thread, 2 thread or 3 or 4, the multiplier goes to 21x and no longer goes to 24x.

so now i get speed step going from 9x to 21x multiplers in various increments.

thankyou for your assistance in this matter, this was exactly the result i was after. now i can go play some more with the overclocking without going too high on baseclock.

It is all much more complicated nowadays to get a stable overclock with all the extra settings, onboard memory controllers, etc.

tell me about it, i got error in linx last night at around the 7 hour 33min mark. i dont think its vcore related, if it was the error would have occurred a lot sooner. i think the main culprit is the vtt voltage. can only increase and try again.
