GA-P55A-UD3 - GPU runs at x4 not x8 when sata3 is used

GA-P55A-UD3 - GPU runs at x4 not x8 when sata3 is used
« on: July 16, 2010, 01:35:34 pm »
Hi all,

So I just got this motherboard yesterday, installed everything and it works fine, baring in mind that if I use sata 3, then my GPU will be forced to run at x8 (which my crucial C300 does in this case). However, when I go over to GPU-Z, it says that it's running at PCI-E x4. I am aware that the GPU will be forced to run slower speeds when a SATA3 device is used, but according to the product specifications (bottom page of http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3242#sp ) it should run at x8, not x4.

Why is this?

This is a software reading and therefore maybe incorrect.

Okay, how can I accurately see what speed my GPU is running at? Whether or not the program is right or wrong, I still want want to know for sure :)

You can't the best you can do is run benchmarks like SiSoftware with Video rendering test and match your GPU up with what’s listed or check your FPS  in game with some of the sites.

Really the SATA3 ports with the bandwidth of the CPU PCI-e 2.0 x8 is pointless and you be better off on the Intel SATA ports regardless if your SSD can break SATA2 speeds.

Peteruk is quite correct. Your SSD will at best only just go above the speed of SATA2 and if you are talking about running RAID0 array then it has been proven that the SATA3 ports driven by the Marvell 9128 chip are actually slower than the ICH10 SATA2 ports.

I have plugged in the SSD to the SATA2 controller, leaving the marvell ones intact. However, I still get the same results on all 3 benchmark programs.

What does “leaving the marvell ones intact” mean if you plugged your SSD into SATA2 ports?

If your benchmarking to compare PCI-e 2.0 x16 to x8 be sure to disable Turbo SATA3 / USB3.0 in the BIOS and even when you compare your card in x16 or x8 the results should be the same or close as really there is enough bandwidth to run a card at x8 without much performance loss.

I have disabled turbo mode in the BIOS and I'm still getting "x4" readings.

Software reading remember.

Problem fixed. Reset CMOS did the trick.
