Z490 gaming x will not allow windows installation
« on: December 01, 2020, 10:47:34 pm »
Product Name:   Z490 GAMING X (1.0)
BIOS Ver:   F2
Model:   Intel i5-10600
Power Supply:   550w Antec
Memory Part No.:   Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 32GB 3600

I am not a computer genius but this is the fourth computer build I've done. I was hoping for a straightforward affair but sadly I am hours into the process without much success.
I have installed all components and can access BIOS/UEFI. I am able to define the boot order to install Windows 10 but either using UEFI, it reads the USB stick for a few seconds and then reverts to the BIOS menu OR using legacy option, there is a white cursor in the top left of the screen until I 'reboot' the computer.
When reading the BIOS settings, the motherboard is recognising SATA drives appropriately, as well as my processor and RAM and USB stick. However, despite using the well reviewed RUFUS software to create a USB stick in either UEFI mode or Legacy mode, I am no further forward. I have tried the same exercise on different USB sticks, different versions of windows 10 going back to 2018 and also a SATA DVD with windows installation disk and a USB DVD with windows installation disk but still no success.
One thing that I haven't tried is updating the BIOS from F2 to F6 but I am concerned that this will invalidate my warranty if things go pear shaped and my motherboard becomes a brick.
Any suggestions please? Thanks in anticipation - Mark

Greetings,
Use the windows 10 media creation tool to create your install media.

When you get to the step where you chose the install destination, press shift+F10

At the command prompt, type the following commands:

"diskpart", press enter
then "list disk", press enter
then "select disk0", press enter

you will see message disk0 is now selected

now type "clean", press enter
then "convert gpt", press enter
then "exit"

Now close the command prompt and select you newly converted GPT disk as the destination.

Do not use Rufus to create your boot media...  Microsoft does all that for you.

Thanks very much shadowsports - this did the trick. Using DISKPART was a game changer.
