Indeed, you are correct.  When flashing, you want to remove as many variables or points of failure as possible.  Back up first, ensure the system is connected to UPS, then flash from within the BIOS. 

As far as OS updates go.  I usually use what windows update offers.  There are some circumstances. such as audio drivers or video where you get additional configuration options, so in that case install the manufacturers drivers.

I don't update drivers and the Bios unless I really have too. Video driver is like 6 months old. I'll let that go till I really have to update it. If I'm not having any problems I leave well enough alone.
