Will an OCZ Vertex 2 have issues with a Gigabyte Motherboard?
« on: September 25, 2010, 05:59:34 am »
Hi all!

I am thinking about purchasing the following SSD to place my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my new build.

I keep reading posts that are warning about issues with this SSD and Gigabyte MB's.

Can someone here help me understand this issue?

Here's the SSD I am interested in: OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Here are what some of the reviews are saying about some of the issues:

  • Shipped with Firmware1.11 had to roll it back to 1.10 to clear a S.M.A.R.T. conflict with Gigabyte BIOS.

Firmware problem with Gigabyte boards. SSD has 1.11 firmware preinstalled. BIOS reports "SMART Command Failed" during POST. Same problem reported by other Gigabyte users on OCZ support forum.

Can anyone here help me better understand this?

Thanks,

Soar

Hi Soar
Yes there are issues but I don't think they will be long lasting just a nuisance for now. Here is one like you described on our forum:

DM, I keep looking at and drooling over the deal on the Vertex 2 60gb and still have some questions...Could you help me with some answers again please?

Is it very difficult to set up.
What is involved in the set up?
Is 60gb's really enough without stressing out?
Would upcoming Windows 7 updates take up lots more space, or just a little more?
What exactly would you recommend I install on it besides the OS [may I put Microsoft Office 2010 Pro on it or is it tooooo big?
What about Pagefile, temporary files/Profile data, hibernation, etc. [must I move that too]?
How many GB's should I keep free on this SSD before I risk problems?
Would recommend partitioning to reserve a certain amount of GB's for free space?
If you were in my shoes [leather booties over eagles claws], would you purchase a 60gb or wait until the 80 gb and 100gb drop in price?

[Soar pauses for a breathe after blurting out all his questions...]

Ok, I hope I haven't worn you guys out!

Hi Soar
It really all depends on how bad you want the drive. You can make do with a 60Gb without any major problems as long as you use it just for the OS and a few of your more used programs like office. I am not sure of the size of 2010 but if it is something like 2007 then it won't be a problem. Personally I run the swapfile on another drive(magnetic) for two reasons the first being that it is good practice to keep the OS and swapfile seperate for speed purposes and secopndly because it doesn't help the SSD because it is constantly changing.
Windows updates I don't think are anything to worry about.
No point partitioning because you wouldn't be making the free space available to the OS.
Size wise just buy the biggest you can afford at the time. There will always be bigger, faster and cheaper ones just round the corner.
Hope this helps ;)

Hi Jannie. Glad to hear that you've got your SSD. The Intel is the best at the moment. It certainly makes a difference to the boot and loading speeds doesn't it?  ;D

Ah, I'm too wise to get jealous Jannie. But, of course, your getting an SSD has just meant that you create more problems in a shorter time span!!  :D

And another thing, Won't the Doctor give you some ointment if you have an SSD?  :P
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.
