x870i Multiple DVI monitors

x870i Multiple DVI monitors
« on: March 27, 2025, 12:09:30 am »
Alright, finally got the machine up and running and now am running into a roadblock trying to get my mother's very old monitors running with a very new machine. I can get one of them running with a HDMI > DVI cable. The second one I attempted to get a USBC to female display port adapter and then a DP > DVI adapter cable. Windows 11 does not detect that second display. I see that the 760m available in my AMD 8600g is supposed to support 4 displays. I haven't attempted to do any fancy multiple display business in a while. And, I am not sure how to best approach this problem since these monitors are much older than HDMI/DP (daisy chaining). Is it possible to get the USB4 DP port to DVI somehow? Is this a valid approach but I am just using the wrong cables? Or, is there a simpler approach? Would an MST hub be a better way to go? (DVIx2(two monitors) > HDMIx2(MST hub) > DP input)

What are connection on the monitors like VGA, HDMi, or DVI? The monitors flat screen or CRT's.

When connecting monitors you always do one at time.

Get the first one up and running that will be the main monitor.

Have the second one on with cable plug into the monitor, but not into the computer.

Once you are in windows plug the second in.

They make all kinds different cables. Plus forget the little adapter VGA to DVI. More than have of them don't work. You best to get the cable type. Plus try to work HDMi to VGA, VGA to DVI & HDMI to Display port. VGA to display port some times doesn't work.

One other I forgot when setting up the monitors always go from left to right.

Have you main monitor on the left and the 2nd monitor on the right. That way you are going between the 2 monitors.

If you the main one on is the right and 2nd one on the left. Now when you move the mouse from the main one to the other one. You will have go to the right side one the main monitor and come in on left side of the 2nd monitor.

If you understand what I'm saying. #1 on the left #2 on the right. The other way #2 on the left #1 on the right. You have make a big circle to get from #1 to #2. VS only going a cross the 2 monitors in the middle.

Both monitors have only DVI inputs. I guess I'm going to attempt an MST hub. USB4 DP port to MST Hub. Then try one HDMI to DVI cable at a time from the hub.

No matter what you try will not work. You only have 1 HDMi port. With the Hub you only going to be able to use 1 monitor at a time. They make "Y" cables where can connect more one item to them. But again they might not work.

Don't know how many monitors you want to connect. I think the best thing here is get a low profile video card. The money you will spend to try different things it might be cheaper to just buy Video card.

Uh, don't I have an HDMI port AND a DisplayPort (in the form of a USB C slot)? It's my understanding that the DisplayPort should allow for one of these hubs to drive up to at least 3 different monitors.

I'm just shooting for 2 monitors (what my mom has grown accustomed to). And, the motherboard/CPU claim they should be able to handle 4. But, just curious how that would even be possible with only 2 outputs. I guess modern monitors have both inputs and outputs so you can daisy chain them. I think the hub should work fine. But, my one worry is, do these newer monitors do something over the HDMI/DP channel to indicate that they exist?

If possible I'd rather save the PCIe slot for some other purpose like additional storage. The integrated graphics on the 8600g are more than sufficient for cat videos and spelling bee.

Thanks. I didn't realize there was a direct USB C to DVI cable. I'll try that if the hub fails.

You can almost get any thing to connect almost everything out there. I have 2 draws full of adapters & cables you can connect almost everything. I have even a DVI to HDMI cable that is 25ft long.

But be care some of that stuff doesn't work some times. Just look at the ratings on what you are going to buy.
