I just purchased a GA-MA77OT-UD3 need advice re the ATX 12V power connector.

My current 500 watt PSU has a 4- pin connecter but not an 8-pin ATX power connector

My CPU is an AMD Athlon ll 3.0 GHZ Triple Core 1.5 MB cache

Can I use the 4-pin ATX 12V power connector plug for the 8-pin ATX power connector socket on my Motherboard or do I need to purchase a new PSU with the correct  8-pin ATX power connector?

Or is there an adaptor which I can get?

any help on this would be appreciated

Thanks

Bobski

It is possible to buy an adaptor, however if your PSU is getting older or a bit small an new one would be a good investment.

As DM said you can buy an adaptor from Maplins or somewhere like that but, depending on the rest of your build, you might be able to getaway with just using the 4 pin ATX plug. You will need to make sure that you plug it into the top half the ATX Socket (see Picture).

You won't harm your motherboard by using just the 4 pin plug but you might have problems getting the system to run properly if you are using lots of other components. So it might be worth looking into a newer PSU, that has the correct plugs, if you can afford it.

No you won't cause any damage. I have built many lower spec PC's and they are still running OK with just the 4 Pin ATX. The 8 Pin option just gives you a little more power stability and is one of the reasons I like Gigabyte Boards. If you look at other Mobo Manufacturers most of them still only use a 4 pin ATX plug on the AMD boards..

I wouldn't want to add any high-end Graphics Cards or extra RAM to them though as it might be pushing things a bit too far.
