Momentary audio distortion
« on: November 27, 2010, 10:37:24 am »
After listening to music on my computer for about 50 minutes, I get momentary audio distortion for about 2-3 seconds. This seems to happen if I am streaming video or listening to iTunes. It is very obvious distortion (a sort of deep  electronic distortion of the audio stream) that is making me think this a motherboard problem. Anyone come across this?

Nope, not come across this one myself but I use a separate Audio Card.
Are you using the on-board audio?
Download and run DPC Latency Checker from here: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml as this kind of thing can be caused by many factors both hardware and software. See if you are getting latency issues whilst running programmes.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Yes, I am using the Realtek High Definition Audio that is built into the motherbaord. The distortion is regular as clockwork - about 20 minutes into playing music, there is a strong distortion that last less than 5 seconds, but is very noticeable - a bit like when Neo enters the Matrix for the first time  :D

Is there a way to record a log of events to see if the audio system is generating any error messages?

If it is that regular and dependable I would suggest checking your Windows Power Saving scheme initially. If not that then any other programs that run a scheduled action.
