Gigabyte GA-880GMA-UD2H AMD 880G DDR3 Problems CPU And Fan
« on: September 20, 2010, 06:03:13 pm »
Hi, im having some problems with a new build. I have running

- AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 95W SIX CORE processor overclocked to 3.80GHz+
- Gigabyte GA-880GMA-UD2H AMD 880G DDR3 microATX Motherboard
- Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800
- OCZ Vendetta 2 CPU Cooler
- OCZ StealthXStream 2 700W Power Supply

There is a problem with the cpu fan, it doesnt seem to spin when switched on. I instantly thought it was the fan, but then plugged it into another board and it span, then i thought it was the motherboard but then i plugged a different fan into the cpu fan connector and it worked. Then tried the original set up and the fan still doesnt spin, so Im a bit confused.

Has anyone got any pointers as to what this could be, any help would be great. thanks.

Hi there,

I had a similar situation with my Noctua Cooler's fans when I first installed that to my system. There are a couple of things you can try that may help.
In BIOS go to the PC Health Section and disable CPU Smart Fan Control this should make your CPU fan(s) run at full speed rather than being adjusted by the PC. Try setting the CPU Smart Fan Mode to PWM rather than AUTO, this doesn't always make a  difference but it can sometimes help.

Another option is to do what I have done, that is to disable all of the CPU warnings and attach the Cooler Fan(s) directly to the PSU (you may need to get a couple of adaptors to do this). This means they run at full speed all of the time  but I have found it is a more reliable method for keeping the fans running and the CPU cool.

Yes it is the fan wiring. I take it you have a four pin fan? If you want it to run at 100% you need to cut the blue wire. this is explained by 1Day as follows:

It will not run at full speed on the 4 pin header with out prompting. Prompting means an instruction from the bios to run at max and ignore the temp of the bit of motherboard it is mean to be looking after. That is a bit weird in my view but there you have it. I took a hair-dryer and heated up the south bridge and it spun up to max after a few minutes of that treatment. Took away the heat source and rebooted, spun up and then stopped.

But will run at 100% if put in this configuration on a three pin fan header.

you two are absolute legends. Here is what I did.

I cut the blue wire, but that didnt do anything, so then I went into bios and turned off the smart fan control, and put it to PWM, I also turned off any warnings for the CPU. Then I saved and rebooted, and hey presto the fan started and is still going, thank you so much.

Hi Ben,

pleased to have been able to help and that your fan is now running at start-up.

Just a small note of caution, as you have switched off the CPU warnings you will need to use something such CoreTemp ( http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ ) to monitor your CPU temperatures. It will run from start-up and, if you are using Windows, it will display the temp of the CPU in the notification area of the taskbar which can be really helpful.
