Thanks for the input.  ;D
This infact the 3rd PSU i've tried the others were a 450,550 and this new 650 all had the same results.
Lastnight i did get win7 to boot with the 9800 in on the second pcie slot but it was very unstable.

Hi there,

Have you tried removing your sound card? There have been a few instances where this has been the cause of such problems especially when running alongside NVidia graphic cards (a driver clash I think?) and it might be worthwhile eliminating this before looking at other components.

I would say that your 650 Watt PSU is more than adequate, especially with your system specs. However, the graphic cards you are trying to use are all higher spec and it might be worthwhile, if possible, trying a lower spec GPU just to see if the problem is with the Mobo PCIE slots or the initial power draw being asked for by the graphic cards.

yep i've tried removing the soundcard with the same result.
My previous card was  nvidia 8800GT which ran fine untill its untimely demise.

I've got to say that this is a bit of a puzzle. From your system Specs and all the things you have tried I cannot see any reason why this is causing so many problems.

Have you tried a clean windows install? It could be that the drivers have become corrupted and a clean install might cure things if this is the case.

Another thing that I can think of are under what circumstances your old graphic card died. If it failed catastrophically it may have caused some damage to the PCIE slot but, to be honest, this is unlikely. The only way to test out if the PCIE slots are damaged would be to try them out with a lower spec'd graphic card to see if they work properly.

The third problem could be the power draw of the graphic card and this could only be proved or disproved by trying an even higher rated PSU. There have been a lot of instances where, even new PSU's are the cause of such issues as they do not supply enough constant Amps.

Finally it could be that the BIOS is at fault and the only way of knowing this would be to contact Gigabyte Technical Support.

I've tried XP 64 and Win 7 both times the PC won't boot with the 9800 drivers in.
My old 8800 died on an old motherboard/PSU so basicly the system i have now is almost brand new (motherboard,CPU,PSU all new) and the 8800 has lines and pixelation on screen and didn't go out with a bang if you know what i mean.
I can run a ATi 5750 in the PCIe slot but it has alot of driver crashes making any games unplayable.
I've been told on the ATi forums that thats a hardware problem and not software which to me sounds like the motherboard.
I've tried driver sweeper after every driver installed and installed drivers from a fresh win7 install and still the problems there.

The 9800 did boot in the second pcie slot but was unstable and had driver crashes.

I have read of another chap on these forums with the same motherboard who had noise on his PCIE x16 slot and am wondering if i have the same problem.

Well, the only way of knowing for sure if it is a problem with the mobo would be to RMA it and have it checked by Gigabyte. As you seem to have explored all the other options this would most probably be the best course of action. You can send them an e-mail here: returns@gbt-tech.co.uk and see what advice they can offer.

You could try downloading and running dpclatency checker. It might help track down the problem.

problem with that is
A: i can only boot the system with the ATi card in
B: i know that it has graphic driver crashes which are causing that spike (i think)

You have something that is accessing the kernal in an unauthorised manor. You will need to go into Device Manager and try disabling devices that are not essential for the system to run one at a time and see which it is. Time consuming job! Try sound, lan, etc.

Creative drivers are spiking with furmark running so going to remove soundcard and try onboard sound.
