gigabyte x58a-ud3r & 3ware raid controller(9690sa-4i) issues
« on: September 14, 2010, 03:50:13 pm »
Ok Folks, ran into a strange issue that could use some ideas on:

have a raid controller that i installed in the pci-express x8_2 slot because both the 16x slots are taken up by GTX280 cards so its the only available slot i have. Problem is that with the raid controller installed, the vid cards wont display anything. I can unplug the controller and displays fine so i'm speculating that since the x8_2 slot shares bandwidth with the 16x_2 slot that it may be interrupting the gtx280s from displaying video.

Any thoughts on this?

Thx,

Randy G.

system:

i7 930
6 gigs kingston hyperx 2ghz memory
2-gtx 280s(sli)
2-64 gig imation ssds.

The only reason I can think of is the available bandwidth of the PCIE bus being exceeded. Doesn't help much anyway even if I am right as there is not many options.
Actually what PSU are you running?

From the Specifications:
(Note 3)
The PCIEX8_1 and PCIEX8_2 slots share bandwidth with the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots respectively. When PCIEX8_1 is populated with an expansion card, the PCIEX16_1 slot will operate  at up to x8 mode; when PCIEX8_2 is populated with an expansion card, the PCIEX16_2 slot will operate at up to x8 mode.

You are correct, and I believe if you have a GFX card in PCIEX16_2 you can only use a GFX card in the PCIEX8_2 slot.  If no graphics card is in PCIEX16_2, you can use the PCIEX8_2 slot for anything you like.

Move drives out of the white SATA ports (mainly the Marvell ones) and don't use USB 3 ports then  disable “Onboard USB 3.0 Controller” & “GSATA 6_7/IDE Controller”.

This might be enough to get it to work.

Also set “Init Display First” to “PCIE x16-1”

I have 2 graphics cards in slot pci X16 running in X16 mode and same problem with my GA-X58A-UD5

Only a solution is to plug addon card in PCIe-X1 slot if possible

That is normal limitation
