GA-X58A-UD3R Windows 7 Install Lockup

Hello,

I have just purchased the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R (rev 2.0)  and I have not been able to install Windows 7  64-bit or 32-bit. The initial load from the CD goes fine. After the system reboots though it hangs when "setup is updating registry settings." I have tried various configurations and tried both the fail-safe and optimized defaults. I have tried various configuration with the drives and have varied the error somewhat, but the most consistent error is with the straight forward setup of one drive, 6 GB memory, and optimized defaults always ending with the system hanging. (If I reboot at this point the system starts a boot loop.) Oh, and I loaded the FB version bios, it didn't make any noticeable difference.

I am wondering if these X58 boards are sensitive to the memory installed. The Corsair sticks I have are not listed on Gigabyte's supported memory list but are listed on Corsair's site as compatible.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.
You are quite right the X58 boards are quite fussy when it comes to the memory that they work with. However if it is on Corsairs' website as compatible with this motherboard then it should be fine. You could try checkiong the memory is ok though by running Memtest86+ on the modules one at a time for at least ten loops.

I meant to mention that I had run Memtest86+. I ran 4.10 for a few hours with no problem. I will try the 4.15 you recommended. Can't hurt. I'm beginning to think that the board may be bad. I tried loading Fedora and the during install the system powers off. It did this twice and then I tried Ubuntu with the same results. The were older versions, but not that old.

In that case I would advise checking the CPU socket for bent pin/s. They are tiny and not easy to see well so you might find it easier to take a couple of macro (close up) photos and the post them here for us to check.

Have You also tried AHCI mode? What graphics card do You use?

Here is a photo of the socket. (It was tough getting is small enough to attach.) I didn't see anything obvious, but I don't know what I am looking for.

AHCI Mode - I do recall trying AHCI, unfortunetly I don't recall the outcome of that mode. I think I ended up with chkdsk running on the reboot.

The graphics card is an old XFX GF-6800, 256MB. I did try a couple of different slots.

The pins looked alright as far as I could tell because the lighting wasn't perfect or even but I don't think there were any bent pins.

Regarding AHCI it isn't as stable as IDE mode and of course optical drives wont work under it.

I've seen a number of posts on problems with Corsair 850 and 950 watt power supplies causing issues just like you.  Might be worth checking.  So sorry you are having grief.

I was going to pull the board and try to get some better pics, but once I did I started looking with a magnifying glass. I could see them pretty well and didn't find anything bend. The only thing I noticed was that if the light hit just right about three (in a row) of the tabs show slightly different reflection. But close up they looked the same as all the other pins. (Was making me nutz. I want all my pins to shine the same!)

jdvoracek - a.k.a. John, I've got a 550 watt power supply I can try. I guess it should be enough to run the system stripped down... maybe. Worth a try.

It sounds a little supicious to be fair. Often it is only a minute amount they are bent. Anyway if you decide to take some pictures you can put them here for us to check.

Exactly which Corsair PSU have you got?
