I only see 6gb of memory at bios bootup rather than the full 8gb ??

I have raised a gigabyte ticket but had no repsonse over the last week..email ticket 988938 10/15/2010 20:37 do they actually read these ???

So i thought i'd try here .. details of M/B below.

I only see 6gb of memory at bios bootup rather than the full 8gb ??

Why is this ?? have i wasted my money on additional memory ??

The gigabyte user manual states upto 16gb of ddr2 memory ??

I have tried swapping them around from slot to slot but still no difference.
I have reduce dthe UMA in board graphics to use only 128mb rather than 2gb, but it still only shows 6gb memory ??

Model Name : GA-MA78G-DS3H(rev. 2.x)
--------------------------
M/B Rev : 2.x
BIOS Ver : FA
Serial No. :
Purchase Dealer :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VGA Brand : ATi      Model :
CPU Brand : AMD      Model : Phenom       Speed : 2mhz
Operation System : Vista 64-bit      SP :
Memory Brand : Kingston      Type : DDRII
Memory Size : 2048      Speed :
Power Supply : W

Memory config.
2 x 2gb Kingston ddr2
2 x 2gb Transend ddr2

Inserted into following banks and using dmi-info for information
If you put them in pairs ie. 2 x kingston in slot 0/1 and 2 x transend in slot 2/3 then you get the same results apart from the transends are running at slightly faster speeds

slot 0 (Kingston 2gb) showing 155ns 1024mb
slot 2 (Transend 2gb) showing 155ns 2048mb PC2-6400 (800MHz)
slot 3 (Kingston 2gb) showing 155ns 1024mb
slot 4 (Transend 2gb) showing 155ns 2048mb PC2-6400 (800MHz)

Hi there, and welcome to the forum.

Getting information from Gigabyte is a bit like getting blood from a stone and can be very frustrating at times and, when you do finally get a response you sometimes need a degree in mangled English to understand it. (that's my rant for the day over!)

As a matter of interest are you certain that the Kingston RAM is definitely 2 X 2Gb modules and that you didn't buy a 2 X 1Gb matched pair? It is a simple mistake and one I have come across on many occasions.

If you are sure that the modules are 2Gb, is it being recognised correctly if you put just one stick of Kingston RAM on the motherboard?

EDIT:  You might also benefit from updating your BIOS as FA is the original version and it is now at FDF. you can download the latest BIOS from here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2931&dl=1#bios

Cheers for the repsonse.

I think i have found out why i am only seeing 6gb instead of 8gb.
If i remove the transend and leave just the 2x2gb kingston memory .. the bios show only 2gb instead of the 4gb

The kingston memory is labeled as 2gb and speced as below.. but only shows up as 1gb modules....
Now either the ddr2 memory is wrongly labeled or the m/b is not working with this type of memory ..

KHX6400D2LLK2/2G  2GB 800MHz DDR2 Non-ECC
Low-Latency CL4 (kit of 2) 4-4-4-12 2.0V

Any ideas ?????

I have found another 2 x 2gb memory modules wich i have installed and i now see all 8gb of memory.. but am still confused about the kingston memory..

If the other RAM is being seen correctly then I feel it is safe to assume there is a problem with the original sticks either being labelled incorrectly or not working properly and, if it was me, I would RMA them.

I very much doubt there is a problem with the motherboard, especially as it does recognise 8Gb of RAM when you swap the modules.

Actually the memory is labelled correctly and consists of 2x1GB sticks. So it is being reported correctly as well.

Not sure what you mean  ??

So each memory stick is 2Gb or 1Gb ?? If they are 2Gb why i sthe bios only showing 1Gb ??

Yes each module is 1GB making it a 2GB kit. That's what the K2 stands for in the memory number.

Check it here if you want to: http://www.kingston.com/hyperx/products/khx_ddr2.asp

Well bugger me..... i thought i'd bought 2 x 2gb modules !!!!!

Not a 2gb kit .. consisting of 2 x 1gb modules..!!

Well its my fault not reading it correctly.... but i think they should put on each module the memory capacity of each individual module..

Easy enough done and I guess it's good to know there is nothing wrong with your PC!  :D
