P55m POST problems with asus 6850
« on: November 08, 2010, 02:03:06 pm »
hi, went to forum after realising gb tech support on website was non-existent, am hoping here would be much more helpful

so the thing is I upgraded my gtx 260 to a 6850 doing the usual driver clean and stuff. However, the computer refused to post 9/10 times after the change(however it does sometimes go through). have contacted asus support and i have used the gfx on another pc and i can definitely confirm the 6850 and the gtx are both working.
I have played with bios settings ( ie clearing cmos, updating etc), changed psus and even reseat most components on the mobo and also cleaning the pci-e connectors with an eraser. so i am wondering if any of you have a better idea?

also the POST beeps did not indicate that the card was not detected, in fact when the 6850 was in most times it didnt beep at all
specs are
GA P55m-UD2, i5-750, 4gb ddr3 1600 (corsair cl8), 650w XFX core series, win 7 64bit

any reply at all would be greatly appreciated? (am back to running on the gtx, which is still pretty awesomw btw)

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

We will certainly do whatever we can to help you sort your problem out.

Are you running the latest version of the BIOS?

What is the revision number of your motherboard?

Have you got fast boot enabled in the BIOS?

Have you got a buzzer installed?

thanks for the swift reply dark mantis,
am using the f11 (latest bios) now for the p55m-ud2 (rev 1.0)
have experimented with both fast boot and none on (now no fast boot)
and yes i installed a buzzer.

have read extra about problems with this mobo, although if a diff nature
but the problems are almost like smoggie's one (http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2790.0.html)
where all the stuff spins and powers up but no beeps.

funny thing is, it does run at times, and if i revert to the gtx it runs again?

The question regarding the fast boot was because on a lot of boards the BIOS  beep doesn't happen if fast boot is enabled.

The main problem would sound like a power or BIOS problem. The PSU you are using is 650W you say but have you got a model number for it so I can check the specs. Often with these it isn't the total output that is the trouble it is the fact that it is split instead of being single rail for the  12V.

When you updated the BIOS last time was it before or after the GPU swap to the new card?

Did you use QFlash to do the update?

Did you disable Keep DMI data when you did the update?

the psu im currently using is in this link : ( http://xfxforce.com/en-gb/products/psu/Core/P1-650S-NLB9.aspx )
before i put that in i used a corsair hx 520 ( http://www.corsair.com/products/hx/default.aspx )

i updated the bios(using qflash) after the new card was installed, however i cant remember what i did regarding DMI data, sorry!

really apreciate you trying to walk me through this, although you dont have to trouble yourself so much as the pc is running right now with the other gfx.

After checking the PSU specs I think it should be fine as it is 12V single rail and seems to be quite well made.

I would say the next test would be to run Memtest86+.  Even though it seems like a GPU problem it might just be manifesting itself that way. You can download Memtest here:

Memtest86+    http://www.memtest.org/

Run it on each module for at least ten loops and if you get nay errors the stick is faulty.

Disable the following:
C3/C6/C7 State Support
CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)
and try setting the “PCI Express Frequency(Mhz)” to 100 and “PCI Express Clock Drive” to 1000mV.

hi there,sorry late reply
have done the rest (except memtest, ive done that once before, and i think the ram still runs without errors since ive checked and reseat (on diff slots) the mem)

sadly same stuff happens. Thanks anyways for your time to reply this. I think the problem might be the pci-e socket is physically damaged or some sort (although weird that it runs fine when it works) or something.

no biggie, again thanks

What slots have you got the memory in now?
The RAM should be in the two WHITE slots to boot.
