>As you mentioned I too would be suspicious if the package had any bits missing. Were there any other signs that it migh not have been a new board?
There was at least one config already saved (F11 in BIOS setup) so someone was playing as I doubt the factory sends it that way.
>You shouldn't have to install any drivers for the drive when installing Windows 7 64 bit. Is your Windows copy an original?
Agree, and "original"? well, "legal" but not shipped from Microsoft. I only have the less expensive Technet Plus service, so I have to download the ISOs from Microsoft, and burn them myself. This one was downloaded a week ago or so, but burned with Imgburn w/verify.
>I think the best cousrse of action is to start from the very beginning and clear the CMOS totally.
I first Q-flashed to FC, then did as you suggested. Somewhere in there with the new bios, it decided to update the microcode on the fast SATA controller. Then it failed again looking for CD/DVD driver when installing W7 Ultimate 64 bit. Tried a presumably identical DVD but one downloaded several months ago and successfully used for installs back then. No joy with that, either. I just downloaded Ubuntu v10.10 in 64 bit and booted it up in "Lite" mode and that worked with no problems.
Now what would make most sense to try? (BTW, thanks for your help).
Or, should I be pestering Gigabyte support? I assume it is slooow, but have never tried it. I have had varying luck with other MB venders, so wanted to start here first.
I can easily get any current or even OLD OS from the Technet site, but suspect this MB should only be used with recent OSes.
