GA-880GA-UD3H Controllers
« on: November 28, 2010, 03:39:52 pm »
Which controller on this GA-880GA-UD3H (v2.1) board controls the ATA (IDE) port?  The one with the fat ribbon cable.

I'm a bit worried by recent events, and want to be sure I have things properly separated.  I have an ATA DVD drive, which is using the old-fashioned IDE port on the motherboard.  And I have a 4-disk RAID-10 array on the SATA3_0-3 ports (with SATA3 support disabled).

Twice now, DVD activity has caused severe system anomalies.  The first time, I inserted a blank disc to be burned (by Nero), and I got a whole flurry of New Device arrival popups.  It turned out that one of the RAID disks had dropped out of the array, and the backup MFT was now in use on it.  So I had to reassign the drive, and rebuild the array.  Nasty!  Then, tempting fate, I burned another DVD and all went well.  Until I was closing the drawer after removing the disc.  Got an F4 BSOD.

So, it would seem extremely prudent to make sure the DVD is on a different controller than the RAID array!  Is it?  Or do I need to buy another one that I can plug into one of the GSATA2 ports?  Hard to see how I read the (attached) schematic wrong, but I'm really at a loss explaining the above anomalies.

Thanks...

There can be problems when running IDE with SATA and it is better if you can avoid doing so.

But, there shouldn't be a problem as the IDE controller should run through the Gigabyte SATA2 controller. How do you have this set-up in BIOS? If you are using it in AHCI that too can cause problems with older IDE devices. If you have it set in Native IDE Mode then it might be hand in pocket time for a SATA burner.  :-\
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Yeah, I tried the AHCI mode, but it was "problematic" in several quirky ways and didn't offer what I was after (hot-pluggable external dock) anyway.  So it's back to IDE mode.

Well, appreciate the confirmation I've perhaps done what I can.  Could be just coincidence that these things happened, as they did, too.  Time to go check the holiday sales.
